We are seeking a skilled Machine Learning / AI Engineer to design, develop, and maintain AI/ML models that enhance the processing and interoperability of federal electronic health records (EHR) data. This position places strong emphasis on FHIR and other healthcare interoperability standards to enable secure, efficient, and compliant data exchange across federal health systems.

You will collaborate with federal OCIO, data governance, and health informatics teams to deliver AI-driven solutions for data ingestion, schema mapping, anomaly detection, and predictive analytics, ensuring compliance with HIPAA, FedRAMP High, and FISMA requirements. This role is remote with occasional travel to McLean, VA.  The ability to obtain and retain a Public Trust Level 4 clearance is required for consideration.

Key Responsibilities

  • AI/ML Model Development: Build, train, and deploy ML models for FHIR-compliant schema mapping and patient record linkage; implement AI-driven anomaly detection; create predictive models for public health use cases.
  • Healthcare Data Interoperability: Apply FHIR, OMOP, and HL7 standards to integrate federal EHR systems; support tokenization and privacy-preserving record linkage; enable secure interoperability across platforms.
  • Optimization & Governance: Optimize model performance, accuracy, and interpretability; apply model governance frameworks for monitoring, retraining, and compliance; document processes for audit readiness.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related field.
  • 3+ years of hands-on ML/AI model development experience.
  • Proficiency with AWS SageMaker, MLflow, and NLP tools.
  • Experience with FHIR, OMOP, and/or federal EHR data.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, FedRAMP High, and FISMA compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with HHS, CMS, FDA, or other federal public health agencies.
  • Expertise in building data ingestion pipelines for large-scale health record systems.
  • Certifications in AI/ML, cloud technologies, or healthcare informatics.

Compensation:

Salary Range: $150,000 – $160,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
