The Role
The Literacy Consultant develops literacy tools, coaches teachers, reviews student data, and enhances instructional support in New Visions' schools.
Summary Generated by Built In

The Curriculum & Instruction (C&I) Department works to ensure outstanding instruction in every classroom. Sustainable implementation of high-quality curriculum is the most important driver of that aim and supports the growth of teachers, administrators, counselors, and librarians at various stages throughout their careers. We aspire to ground our C&I work in a set of shared elements. We start with an understanding of how students learn; we organize around adult learning principles to support teachers and school leaders; we embed opportunities to modify curriculum materials for specific classroom contexts or student needs; and we organize everything around continuous improvement, to get better over time.

The Literacy Consultant role is responsible for developing tools and resources which address the areas of need for literacy development within the C&I Department and New Visions’ network of schools. This includes developing coaching plans that build the capacity of both teachers and instructional leaders. Part of the role is also calibrating school literacy plans with their student needs. The Literacy Consultant will also clarify the instructional coaching model for various support situations and partner with our data staff to develop new tools for reading in the Portal. This part-time role requires strong collaboration and coordination with internal partners to gather information, then communicating effectively with school-facing staff to understand their challenges and provide solutions.

    • Refining and systematizing a set of core decisions that schools must make to support and monitor reading programs that are aligned with school needs and NYC PS guidelines.
    • Ensuring that the state and federal compliance requirements for students with disabilities and multilingual learners are met when designing reading support programs.
  • Assessing coaching plans that support both teachers and instructional leaders in developing school-based capacity as necessary
  • Codifying and transitioning the work to existing and potentially new Literacy Team members

Education and Experience:

  • Masters-level degree
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in public education, preferably urban schools and secondary level
  • Minimum of 3 years experience coaching teachers and leaders in literacy instruction and reading development at the secondary level

  • Excellent written, oral, organizational, and interpersonal skills, including strong facilitation skills;
