Upstart’s Litigation team is looking for a senior paralegal/legal specialist to join our team. The Upstart Litigation Team needs help to oversee all aspects of litigation case management.

This role is available in the following locations: Remote

This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.

-As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.


  • Assist attorneys with all aspects of cases management including docketing deadlines, maintaining case files, scheduling, billing and providing reminders as necessary; 
  • Act as primary Case Management system (Legal Tracker) administrator, including auditing and keeping the system up-to-date.
  • Manage collection, review and synthesis of records from key stakeholders for the Litigation files;  send to Outside Counsel as needed.
  • Coordinate and draft responses to information requests and third-party subpoenas or search warrants.
  • Review, summarize and prepare legal documents for attorney review, including but not limited to, drafting responses to attorney demand letters,  indemnification letters and settlement agreements.
  • Consult attorneys and provide recommendations with regard to cost and time and provide effective solutions to accomplish client goals;
  • Settle matters under a certain dollar amount and/or risk level.
  • Assist attorneys with compliance with settlement agreements or enforcement of judgments.
  • Assist with litigation activities, including tracking reporting, document management, and analyzing and drafting responses at the state and federal level.
  • Maintain a Litigation Contact List with key stakeholders.
  • Work with other members of the Legal team as well as other company functional departments on special projects and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Compliance and Finance. 
  • Design, develop, and implement or improve systems and processes to increase efficiency, support scalability, and ensure quality.


  • Minimum qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of experience in a top-tier law firm or in-house strongly preferred; paralegal or legal studies or formal paralegal/legal assistant training. 
    • 2+ years of consumer finance and/or lending litigation experience 
    • Excellent communication, analytical, organizational, project management, and interpersonal skills. 
    • A self-starter mentality with the ability to work well under pressure, thrive working under limited direction, and an attitude that no job is too challenging or too small.
    • Ability to provide solutions to a variety of issues of varied scope and complexity and to prioritize and balance multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
    • A strong background in general litigation practice.
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Comfortable working with new technology systems and experience; special emphasis on experience with G Suite for business (Google Drive, Google Sheets, Gmail, etc.) and Legal Tracker by Thomson Reuters but not required. 
    • Notary certification (or willingness to obtain) is a plus.

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package.  The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k).
