On behalf of our client, we are seeking a diligent and business-oriented Legal and Compliance Officer to support corporate legal matters, regulatory compliance, contract management, and organisational governance.
The successful candidate will provide practical legal guidance, monitor compliance obligations, and help the organisation manage legal and regulatory risks within a dynamic financial technology environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal guidance on commercial, regulatory, contractual, and corporate matters.
- Draft, review, and negotiate customer, supplier, partnership, confidentiality, and service agreements.
- Maintain a register of contracts, licences, permits, regulatory obligations, and renewal dates.
- Monitor relevant legislative and regulatory developments and advise management on their implications.
- Support the development and implementation of compliance policies, controls, and procedures.
- Conduct compliance reviews and follow up on agreed corrective actions.
- Support regulatory applications, inspections, inquiries, and reporting requirements.
- Coordinate company-secretarial and corporate-governance documentation.
- Assist with the management of disputes, claims, investigations, and external legal counsel.
- Provide guidance on data protection, consumer protection, anti-bribery, and financial-crime controls.
- Conduct legal and compliance due diligence on potential partners and service providers.
- Facilitate legal and compliance awareness training for employees.
- Maintain accurate legal records and prepare periodic compliance reports.
- Promote ethical conduct and support internal reporting and investigation processes.
- Identify emerging legal risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognised institution.
- Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice or an equivalent professional qualification.
- Admission to practise law in Uganda is required.
- Additional certification in compliance, corporate governance, data protection, or financial crime will be an advantage.
- At least four years of relevant legal or compliance experience.
- Experience within financial services, financial technology, telecommunications, banking, or another regulated sector is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in commercial contracting and regulatory compliance.
- Sound understanding of corporate governance and applicable Ugandan legal requirements.
- Exposure to data protection, consumer protection, anti-bribery, or financial-crime compliance.
- Strong legal research, drafting, negotiation, and analytical capabilities.
- Ability to provide clear and commercially practical advice.
- High levels of confidentiality, professional judgement, and integrity.
