Here, we pride ourselves on designing tangible, inspiring, and impactful solutions that serve all aspects of our business– and being a part of the team means you will play a critical role for Target’s digital experience by increasing ease, simplicity, value, and delight for every touchpoint.
About the role:
As a Lead UX Designer on our Design Systems team, you'll help shape the future of Target's digital experiences across guest and team member products. Our design systems power experiences across platforms, enabling product teams to create consistent, accessible, and scalable solutions with greater speed and quality.
You will lead the creation and evolution of reusable components, patterns, documentation, and governance that enable teams to build exceptional experiences. As product creation evolves through AI-assisted workflows, prompt-based interfaces, and emerging builder tools, you'll help ensure our design systems remain structured, scalable, and ready to support both human and machine consumers.
This role combines systems thinking, design craft, and technical partnership. You'll work closely with designers, engineers, product teams, and platform partners to create robust design system foundations while helping shape how those systems are consumed through modern development workflows, automation, and AI-enabled experiences.
Responsibilities:
Partner with designers, engineers, product managers, and platform teams to identify, prioritize, and deliver reusable components and patterns that drive consistency, efficiency, accessibility, and adoption across products.
Lead the creation and evolution of components and patterns in Figma, ensuring alignment with code, design tokens, accessibility standards, governance practices, and emerging AI-enabled workflows. Create system assets that can be effectively consumed by both humans and machines.
Create and maintain documentation, usage guidance, metadata, implementation standards, and educational resources that help teams successfully adopt the system while supporting automation, tooling, and machine-readable consumption.
Collaborate closely with engineering partners to ensure system assets are accurately represented in code and support modern development workflows across platforms.
Contribute to the evolution of design system governance and architecture, ensuring the system remains scalable, maintainable, and adaptable as product creation evolves.
Evaluate emerging technologies, tooling, and AI-assisted workflows, and help teams adopt new ways of working through education, mentorship, and advocacy for systems thinking.
About you:
6+ years of experience in design systems as a Lead UX Designer, with a portfolio demonstrating the successful evolution and adoption of large-scale, multi-platform design systems serving a broad ecosystem of products and teams.
Deep expertise in design systems, including tokens, components, patterns, governance, accessibility, documentation, and system adoption.
Experience designing, governing, and scaling component libraries in Figma across web, iOS, and Android platforms.
Strong understanding of how design systems are implemented and consumed in code, with experience partnering closely with engineering teams to bring systems to life.
Familiarity with emerging AI-assisted design and development workflows, including prompt-based interfaces, code generation, Figma Make, MCP-enabled tooling, and other technologies shaping the future of product creation.
Understanding of intent-driven design approaches and how patterns, metadata, and system structures enable consistent outcomes across human-authored, automated, and AI-assisted workflows.
Strong systems-thinking skills with the ability to balance immediate product needs with long-term platform sustainability and scalability.
Proven ability to influence strategy and drive alignment across design, engineering, product, accessibility, and platform partners.
Strong communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to advocate for systems thinking, articulate design decisions, and build support for new approaches.
Fluency in responsive design, accessibility standards, and best practices across web, iOS, and Android platforms.
