Position Overview

Freedom Technology Solutions Group is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to lead a team of 10-12 developers responsible for building and enhancing cloud-based geospatial microservices that perform advanced geospatial querying, analytics, ETL processing, and large-scale data visualization for mission-critical systems.

In this role, you will provide technical leadership, establish engineering standards and best practices, mentor team members, and drive the architecture and delivery of scalable Java and AWS-based solutions. You will work closely with stakeholders to develop high-performance services that transform complex data into actionable insights for mission users.

The successful candidate will also lead the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities into mission applications to automate workflows, accelerate data processing, improve system operations, enhance geospatial analysis, and deliver more intelligent decision-support capabilities. This position requires a hands-on technical leader with deep expertise in microservices, cloud technologies, and modern software engineering practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and technical excellence.
  • Establish and maintain software development standards, coding guidelines, architecture principles, and engineering best practices.
  • Provide technical leadership throughout the software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis and design through deployment and sustainment.
  • Design, develop, and maintain high-performance Java-based microservices supporting geospatial analysis and data processing capabilities.
  • Define and oversee system architecture to ensure scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability.
  • Lead technical planning activities, including task estimation, solution design, risk identification, and technology selection.
  • Lead the identification, evaluation, and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) capabilities to enhance mission applications and geospatial services.
  • Conduct code reviews, design reviews, and technical assessments to ensure high-quality deliverables and adherence to established standards.
  • Collaborate with systems engineers, architects, product owners, and stakeholders to translate mission requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Guide the team's adoption of Agile development practices, DevSecOps methodologies, automated testing, and CI/CD processes.
  • Lead the design, deployment, and optimization of cloud-native applications and services utilizing AWS technologies.
  • Support the integration of relational and NoSQL database technologies into enterprise software solutions.
  • Identify and resolve technical challenges while ensuring program objectives, schedules, and quality goals are achieved.
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to both internal leadership and customer stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • Active TS/SCI with Polygraph clearance.
  • Twenty (20) years of experience supporting programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Four (4) additional years of experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrated experience leading software development teams and managing technical execution across multiple projects and development efforts.
  • Proven ability to establish engineering processes, development standards, and technical governance practices.
  • Extensive experience architecting, designing, developing, and deploying enterprise-scale software systems.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Java and related frameworks, including Spring Boot, Hibernate, and other modern development technologies.
  • Experience designing and implementing microservices-based architectures.
  • Hands-on experience developing, deploying, and maintaining applications within Amazon Web Services (AWS) environments.
  • Experience with cloud-native application design and deployment strategies.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps practices.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, system design, and secure coding principles.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience supporting Intelligence Community, Department of Defense, or other mission-focused programs.
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) concepts, geospatial data processing, and visualization technologies.
  • Experience working with both relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and cloud automation tools.
  • AWS professional or associate-level certifications.
  • Experience working in an Agile framework environment.
