ROLE SUMMARY:
The Quality Lab Lead supports the Quality Manager and works closely with operators and managers to ensure quality standards are consistently followed. This role focuses on daily lab operations while also helping production teams solve quality-related issues, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the Quality Department.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee and participate in data entry and analysis using Excel and Smartsheet, including troubleshooting and improving spreadsheet functionality to support quality tracking.
Develop, update, and implement reaction plans for out-of-spec products, ensuring swift corrective actions and cross-functional communication.
Follow, create, and revise SOPs to ensure accurate and consistent physchem, microbiological, and sensory testing across the QA team and production departments.
Manage the microbiological program by analyzing data trends, communicating updates to department heads and QA Lab Technicians, and supporting training on aseptic sampling and microbiological best practices.
Serve as an active leader of the HACCP team, helping continue the development and execution of the Karbach Food Safety Program through coordination, training, and compliance support.
Own and audit the blocking program, ensuring timely escalation and resolution of non-conformances in collaboration with production and QA personnel.
Maintain QA lab inventory by ordering supplies as needed, keeping accurate records of lab materials, and updating inventory databases to ensure seamless workflow.
Participate in production management meetings as needed and prepare to represent quality initiatives, lab updates, and cross-functional concerns.
Collect samples and perform quality checks as needed to support QA operations, including analysis of Alcolyzer results, IBU, DO/TPO/CO₂, VDK, fill weights, seam inspections, and OQI on both product and packaging lines.
Assist with sensory program activities, including sample preparation, panel coordination, data collection and analysis, and benchtop trials as needed.
Contribute to quality improvement projects by coordinating tasks, sharing insights, and actively participating in cross-functional initiatives.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of the Quality Department, with flexibility to adapt as departmental needs evolve.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university; or a minimum of two years related brewing industry experience and/or training in a food laboratory; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Previous experience in a QA role in the brewing industry preferred.
Strong working knowledge of microbiology preferred.
Knowledge of aseptic procedures, HACCP and good manufacturing practices required.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey information across all levels of the organization.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable using various computer applications.
Effective team player who collaborates well in a team-oriented environment.
Able to multitask efficiently while maintaining a sense of urgency and prioritizing tasks appropriately.
Confident in making sound decisions when faced with unexpected situations or schedule changes.
Skilled in troubleshooting and applying critical thinking to resolve issues and complete tasks effectively.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 10-25 pounds.
