The Role

Eaton's ES AMER PCS division is currently seeking a Lead Product Design Engineer - MV Gas Insulated Switchgear. This role is based out of our Moon Twp, PA location.

Lead product design engineering for Eaton's Medium Voltage Circuit Breaker product lines. Primary focus is to grow the business with new product introduction and serve our customers and plants by ensuring continuing function, performance margin and design robustness of Vacuum Circuit Breaker (VCB) products. Responsibilities include new product development primarily focusing on VCB technology as it relates to Gas Insulated Switchgear, generating third party certifications, testing in compliance with standards & functional requirements, supporting the resolution of production yield and quality issues, validating changes in design or manufacturing, and addressing application issues. The position interfaces with product line marketing and multiple plant manufacturing teams, quality personnel, and customers. The individual will have design leadership responsibility for product families, will master vacuum circuit breaker technology, and is expected to develop product line & business expertise. The position entails coordinating and executing new product development and innovation projects of all sizes from inception through validation and production implementation.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $91500.03 - $134200.04 a year.

  • Design products in collaboration with engineering team. Contribute improvements to accelerate the program and reduce costs.
  • Build prototypes and models necessary to perform tests and authorizes lab reports for customer release.
  • Carry out relevant development/investigation and analysis testing in the open lab facilities.
  • Provide detailed CAD design input, including concept design and detail drawings. Tolerance validation. Utilize simulations, create Bills of Materials to meet goals
  • Maintains current understanding of technologies portfolio relevant to product line and competition products and performances.
  • Ensures full support of PROlaunch process and required documentation for relevant projects. When required participate in the preparation of all Pro-launch gates and participate in reviews.
  • Generates test programs and protocols to check design criteria for systems, software, and hardware.
  • Lead design tasks in collaboration with Engineering Manager for new development projects including specifications, test plans, and performance audits.
  • Provides technical leadership with full realization of business results and assumes coordination responsibilities for assigned engineering projects and programs. Initiates solutions to program or project engineering and research problems of unusual magnitude and scope which generally include aspects of more than one technological area.
  • Collaborates with other divisions to participate in R&D programs of mutual interest and benefit. Exerts leadership in technical societies and activities. Prepares and present papers disclosures, write articles for trade magazines to enhance Eaton's reputation in the technical community.
  • Orchestrates necessary product approvals & certifications with the applicable standards agencies (UL, CSA, IEEE etc.) for key new product development projects.
  • Leads routine development meetings to review project schedules, product and process development support and participates in key customer meetings and visits.
  • Should be prepared for occasional overseas travel to suit the need of project reviews, testing etc.

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited institution
  • 7 years of experience in related field with focus on new product development and design
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in related technical fields from an accredited institution.
  • Experience with Six-Sigma quality tools.
  • Communication, presentation and negotiation skills in an international content with Engineering, Marketing and Business-related interests
  • Experience with gas-insulated switchgear

  • Functional leadership and cross-functional teamwork.
  • Basic understanding of site-specific electrical test lab equipment and procedures, including health, safety, and security aspects
  • Fundamental knowledge of both domestic and international product standards and high-power laboratory testing procedures.
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills.
  • Methodical mechanical and electrical problem solver, analytical skills.
  • Mechanical, electromechanical and cost-effective manufacturing design.
  • Understanding product requirements and performance margin. System, product & component design.
  • Laboratory and shop skills.
