Job Summary

The Lead Transmission Line Engineer will have a central role in developing transmission construction and design standards for AVANGRID’s electrical overhead and underground lines. Write engineering specifications for electrical equipment. Create material specifications for various items, such as structures, , conductors, etc. Work independently with only administrative and general direction from supervision. Develop a strong technical knowledge base to serve as technical advisor (SME) for electric equipment such as conductors, structures, switchgear, etc. Follow updates in research and developments taking place in the power industry, through training and industry associations. The engineer will lead teams/projects that solve complex transmission equipment/ design problems taking a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. to work independently with guidance on only the most complex tasks. Participates and represents AVANGRID’s on Industry associations. Mentor other employees.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed, complex engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology & principles & other viable approaches.
  • Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or to improve processes/services.
  • Solves unique standards engineering problems.
  • Utilizes a broad prospective to identify innovative solutions. E.g. forensic analysis, material evaluations, material applications and construction standards.
  • Prepare, maintain, & understand drawings (e.g. schematics, one-line diagrams).
  • Develop & specify equipment, assemble documents & other requirements for assignments of complex level of difficulty using in depth expertise in own discipline.
  • Serve as SME for distribution equipment (e.g. conductors,  switches, poles and structures).
  • Anticipates internal/external business issues and recommend process improvements.
  • Participate in Industry associations.
  • Acts as a facilitator, mentor & review engineering work of others.
  • Anticipates & make recommendations with respect to customer & stakeholder needs.
  • Explains difficult concepts & influences others.
  • Lead engineering teams to complete assigned tasks and projects.
  • Assist in guiding and mentoring engineers in standards engineering methodology.
  • Leads others to analyze and resolve complex problems in non-standard situations & develop creative solutions.
  • Independently apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines & AVANGRID polices/procedures.
  • Possesses an in depth of knowledge and interprets processes and standards related to electrical equipment.
  • Recommends solutions and best practices where appropriate.
  • Represents Standards on projects, task forces and studies.
  • Develop business cases & manage projects/processes/initiatives or teams in accordance with applicable AVANGRID guidelines.
  • Coordinate phases of engineering for assigned portions of a project/program.

Required Qualifications

  • Education & Experience:
    • Requires a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET accredited college/university,
    • 7 years’ minimum experience performing engineering duties, with a preference for 10 years.
    • Specialized advanced training is also required or graduate level engineering degree.
    • A professional engineer’s license is desirable.
  • Knowledge & Skills/Abilities:
    • Possess in depth experience in electric transmission line engineering and knowledge of internal/external business and regulatory issues.
    • Maintains knowledge of leading edge techniques or technology through participation in professional associations. Able to explain difficult concepts and influence others to change.
    • Able to communicate orally or in writing to regulatory and/or public entities.
    • Able to lead a Team or mentor others.
