DEKA Research & Development is seeking a Lead Embedded Software Engineer to join our team working on cutting-edge medical devices. This role is a hands-on technical leadership position. You will lead through technical expertise, system ownership, and influence across teams while remaining deeply involved in design and implementation. You will work across every layer of software—from embedded system device drivers and real-time control loops to cloud connectivity and UI development—partnering with electrical, mechanical, and biomedical engineers to deliver life-changing medical devices.
This is an on-site role; remote and hybrid are not available.
How you will make an impact as a Lead Embedded Software Engineer:
- Serve as a technical lead and individual contributor for embedded software systems and features
- Own and drive software architecture, technical direction, and key design decisions without direct people management
- Design, implement, and verify embedded software with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and maintainability
- Define, analyze, and maintain software requirements, interfaces, and development procedures
- Lead technical reviews (design, architecture, and code), ensuring high-quality and compliant software solutions
- Solve complex system-level problems across hardware and software boundaries
- Provide technical mentorship and guidance to other engineers through collaboration, design reviews, and code reviews
- Partner closely with cross-functional teams to ensure cohesive system integration and successful product delivery
- Help shape engineering best practices, tools, and processes while remaining hands-on
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience, and 5+ years of relevant experience
- Proven experience acting as a technical lead or go-to engineer on complex embedded systems
- Demonstrated experience mentoring or coaching junior engineers in best software practices
- Experience with Python and C/C++
- Experience designing and implementing software/hardware systems for medical devices
- RTOS and embedded systems development (examples include Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Micro C, embedded Linux)
- Experience defining software requirements
- Experience defining requirements, developing, and documenting the architecture of a large software system
- Experience developing and verifying software test procedures to meet software requirements
- Strong troubleshooting skills
- Demonstrated ability to adapt rapidly to changing circumstances and technology
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
- Controls engineering experience beneficial (but not required)
