Description and Requirements
Role Value Proposition:
We are a centralized, enterprise-oriented group of data scientists whose goal is to provide mathematical and statistical based-insight to major decision processes at MetLife. This organization includes a specialist group focused on researching, developing, and deploying analytical methods that will help to transform MetLife. Specifically, this role will be working with the MetLife pet insurance group to automate and streamline the claims process and deliver valuable insights.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Lead Data Scientist, your job will fall into these major categories:

  • Analytics Research and Development: Create and apply analytical techniques to address the needs of MetLife. This includes:
    • Manipulating large-scale structured and unstructured datasets and performing data analysis to extract insights.
    • Developing, implementing, and testing the most appropriate algorithms for a given use case; be able to lead a team of data scientists and provide guidance.
    • Designing and analyzing experiments.
    • Create reports, visualizations, and web applications.
  • Engagement lead with a line of business: You will be the face of data science with the pet insurance business. You'll work with project stakeholders to understand business problems, structure data-driven solutions, and define key metrics for solution assessment. Translate technical insights to non-technical audiences.
  • Advisory Services to Delivery Teams: Provide mentorship and advice to data scientists on project work, ensuring quality and value.
  • Evaluate New Technologies and Services: Become an expert in an area of analytics and, where applicable, provide expert opinions on new technology that can be implemented across the company, including emergent AI topics like LLMs and GenAI.
  • Scale our Value: As a lead data scientist in a global division, you will additionally collaborate with regional and local teams, creating best practices for common analytical projects and delivering value across the globe.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:
Required:

  • Master's or Doctorate in Quantitative Field (Physics, Math, Statistics, Operations Research, Engineering, Actuarial Science, etc.)
  • Atleast 3 years of experience as a data scientist/quantitative researcher/algorithmist (≥2 years for doctorate level)
  • Strong engineering background with programming proficiency in Python (version 3.).
  • High proficiency in classical statistical and mathematical modeling methods, including (but not restricted to) Regression, Classification, Clustering, Neural Networks, and Optimization.
  • Experience in cloud application development.
  • Familiarity with DevOps tools, unit testing, and CI/CD workflows, including Git.
  • Good written and oral communication, with the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
  • Ability to navigate complexity and ambiguity to get things done in a fast-paced environment.
  • Mentor and provide oversight to junior associates while serving as an example by sharing relevant best practices.


Preferred:

  • Knowledge of actuarial science, insurance, or risk management modeling.
  • Experience working in Microsoft Azure, especially model deployment with Azure Machine Learning.
  • Experience in Computer Vision/Optical Character Recognition.
  • Experience with NLP tasks like entity recognition, clustering, and topic modeling.
  • Experience with GenAI prompt engineering.

The wage range for applicants for this position is $105,000- $152,300. This role is also eligible for annual short-term incentive compensation.
