The Opportunity
The Controls Engineer II develops and delivers automation and control-system solutions for critical customer operations. Engineers at this level are given defined engineering deliverables or portions of a larger project and are expected to determine the work necessary to complete them with limited direction.
The role builds on foundational engineering experience through increasingly independent design, development, integration, testing, and field activities. Controls Engineers II are expected to solve routine problems, recognize when additional information or support is needed, and communicate issues or risks that could affect successful delivery.
What You’ll Do
Core Responsibilities:
- Develop and complete defined engineering deliverables or portions of a project, determining the individual tasks necessary to complete the assigned work.
- Apply project requirements, engineering practices, and applicable standards to design, development, integration, testing, implementation, and issue resolution activities.
- Independently complete assigned work with consistent quality while seeking additional information or expertise when needed.
- Identify and resolve routine technical and execution problems and develop potential solutions for issues requiring additional support or direction.
- Coordinate assigned work with other team members and communicate progress, decisions, problems, and risks that could affect successful delivery.
- Continue developing technical capability and judgment through increasingly independent and challenging assignments.
- This position may require up to 50% overnight travel based on project and business needs. Travel may vary throughout the year from little or no travel during local assignments to extended travel while supporting projects outside the employee's home market.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Coordinate assigned deliverables with engineering, project, and other teams to align requirements, interfaces, schedule, and expected outcomes.
- Communicate progress, decisions, problems, and risks clearly and early enough for others to respond appropriately.
- Seek additional information or expertise when needed and incorporate feedback into technical decisions and completed work.
- Communicate directly with customers and partners regarding assigned technical work and independently resolve routine questions and issues within the employee's area of responsibility.
- Communicate technical information clearly and accurately using the appropriate written, verbal, and project documentation methods.
Quality, Safety & Process:
- Follow company policies, quality requirements, engineering practices, and established processes applicable to assigned work.
- Follow all safety requirements, identify and communicate unsafe conditions, and stop or escalate work when necessary to protect people, equipment, or operations.
- Apply appropriate reviews and checks to ensure assigned engineering work is accurate, complete, and ready for its intended use.
- Identify quality, safety, or process issues and take appropriate action to resolve them or engage others when additional support or authority is required.
Leadership & Organizational Influence:
- Contribute to a professional, collaborative, and respectful work environment and support others in achieving team and project goals.
- Take responsibility for assigned outcomes, follow through on commitments, and demonstrate dependable technical and professional behavior.
- Share technical knowledge, lessons learned, and effective practices with less experienced team members and peers.
People Leadership:
- This role does not have formal responsibility for managing employees. Employees are expected to work effectively with others, share knowledge, and support the success and development of teammates.
What We’re Looking For
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or another pertinent technical discipline.
- Typically 2 or more years of relevant experience, with demonstrated capability consistent with the expectations of the role.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of engineering, automation, and control-system concepts, with the ability to apply that knowledge independently to defined engineering work.
- Ability to interpret and apply project requirements, drawings, specifications, procedures, standards, and other technical information.
- Ability to learn and work effectively with new engineering tools, software, platforms, equipment, and customer technologies as assignments require.
- Sound technical judgment for routine engineering work, including recognizing when additional information, expertise, or authority is needed.
- Effective written and verbal communication and the ability to work collaboratively with team members, customers, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to organize and prioritize assigned work, follow through on commitments, and communicate problems or risks that could affect successful delivery.
- Commitment to quality, safety, professional conduct, and continuous improvement.
