The Lead Accountant serves as the technical lead for the General Ledger and is responsible for the integrity of the organization's accounting records. This position leads the monthly financial close process, prepares and reviews complex accounting transactions, ensures timely and accurate financial reporting, and supports internal controls, audits, and grant accounting activities.Working closely with the Controller and Accounting Manager, the Lead Accountant provides technical accounting expertise, identifies opportunities for process improvement, and serves as a resource for accounting staff. This role is expected to exercise independent judgment while ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), federal grant requirements, and organizational policies.

Responsibilities

Essential FunctionsGeneral Ledger Management:- Serve as the primary owner of the General Ledger.- Prepare and post complex journal entries, including payroll, accruals, allocations, deferred revenue, prepaid expenses, and fixed assets.- Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure consistent application of accounting policies.

-Monitor and resolve General Ledger discrepancies and unusual transactions.         

-Review account activity to ensure accuracy and completeness.Month-End and Year-End Close:- Lead execution of the monthly close process.-Produce financial reports for management and leadership.- Develop recurring reports that improve financial transparency and operational decision-making.- Support preparation of annual financial statements.Audit and Compliance:- Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.- Coordinate responses to auditor requests.- Maintain documentation supporting internal controls.- Assist with implementation of accounting standards and organizational policies.- Ensure compliance with GAAP, Uniform Guidance, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.- Maintain cash and reconciliations.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP. 
  • Advanced General Ledger and financial reporting experience. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Experience with ERP financial systems. 
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to identify process improvement opportunities and implement solutions.
Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree (higher degree accepted) in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

Minimum Experience:

  • 5 years Progressive accounting experience. 
  • Experience leading General Ledger functions and month-end close.
