About the Position

We are seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Laboratory Technologist to join our laboratory team.  In this exciting role, you will perform a wide range of clinical laboratory testing procedures, including those of moderate to high complexity, sometimes of an urgent nature.  Your work will play a critical role in diagnosing and aiding the treatment of Clinical Services patients.  By providing accurate and timely test results, you will be at the forefront of public health, ensuring that medical professionals can make informed decisions.  This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about science, healthcare, and making a public health impact.

We Require

  • Laboratory experience working as a laboratory technologist or equivalent

  • Experience working with an electronic laboratory system and an electronic medical record

  • Associate's degree or higher in Laboratory Science, Biology, Medical Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, or Medical Laboratory Technology

Coursework and training of at least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution, is required to include:

  • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR

  • 24 semester hours of science courses (that include 6 semester hours of chemistry; 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination)

Laboratory training that includes either of the following:

  • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS (This training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed in the above paragraph);

  • Three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing

Job Contributions

  • Performs moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory testing procedures in the areas of bacteriology, serology, immunology, parasitology, virology, and mycobacteriology to confirm or rule out the existence of sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, HIV, intestinal parasites, and Tuberculosis, and to monitor the effects of Tuberculosis treatment on a patient, including preparing specimens of blood, urine, bodily fluids, or other specimen types for testing; reading and interpreting cultures, microscopic stains, wet mounts, dark field examinations, and drug susceptibility tests; identifying and reporting bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms; analyzing tests results; interpreting laboratory findings, completing laboratory reports, and reporting results to appropriate medical provider or submitting agency

  • Operates specialized laboratory equipment

  • Monitors, calibrates, and maintains devices according to the manufacturer's guidelines

  • Verifies correct instrument operations using established procedures and quality control checks

  • Identify causes of instrument problems and testing failures

  • Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, media, and test kits

  • Maintains proper records for quality control reports in compliance with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)

  • Performs specimen reception, data entry duties, and workload and statistics gathering duties

  • Train other laboratory technologists

  • Maintains orders and stocks supplies as needed

Working Conditions

  • Work will occur in an office and field environment alongside an interactive team environment, with long periods of standing and exposure to biohazard materials such as bodily specimens (blood, urine, and oral fluid)

  • Potential exposure to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and other related conditions and situations

  • Ability to exert 20-25 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly, and walk/stand to a significant degree

  • Valid Arizona driver’s license is required upon hire

  • Travel will be required to attend conferences, trainings, and possibly varying work locations

  • Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency

  • Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
