Junior Software Developer working on Embedded Linux products

Our Smart Alarms business unit develops secure solutions for monitored alarm transmission, as well as reliable crisis communication solutions that help organisations and rescue teams prevent and respond effectively to critical situations.

We are a small European team developing products that need to remain connected across Ethernet, Wi-Fi and cellular networks, cope with network and operator failures, securely update themselves, and operate reliably in the field for many years.

We are now looking for a Junior Software Developer to join our team in our new office in Theale, near Reading. The role is hybrid, with 3 days a week in the office.

Initially, you will work with our existing products, testing communications protocols against fire and intruder alarm panels and helping us ensure that they work reliably in real-world conditions.

You'll learn how our products communicate with alarm systems and cloud services, investigate problems when things don't behave as expected, and develop tools and tests to help us verify their performance.

As you gain experience, you'll have the opportunity to take on more responsibility, including implementing new communications protocols and features in C and Python.

This is a hands-on software engineering role. You won't be expected to know everything when you start. What matters is that your ability to understand a problem, investigate it, experiment with possible solutions and learn from the results.

We are looking for someone who is curios, analytical and motivated to understand how things work.

You may be a recent graduate or already have some commercial experience. Previous experience in embedded systems is not required, but we would like you to be able to demonstrate your programming ability through personal projects, open-source contributions or other substantial technical work.

For example, you may have:

• Built something using a Raspberry Pi or another single-board computer

• Written a non-trivial application in C

• Contributed to an open-source project

• Built something involving networking, hardware or communications

• Developed and improved a technical project over time

We're interested in what you've actually built and learned from, rather than simply a list of technologies on your CV.

You should have a good practical understanding of Linux and be comfortable working from the command line. Some practical networking knowledge is also important, for example IP addressing, subnetting, DHCP, routing and firewall configuration.

You should also be comfortable using Git for normal software development.

Most importantly, when you encounter something you don't understand, you are willing to investigate it: form a hypothesis, try something, examine the result and work out what happened.

Experience in one or more of the following would be an advantage:

• Substantial personal or open-source software projects

• Good practical knowledge of C

• Linux development on an SBC such as Raspberry Pi

• Practical networking and troubleshooting

• Debugging complex technical problems

• Explaining technical decisions and the trade-offs behind them

• Serial communications or other hardware interfaces

• Open-source software development

You don't need to tick every box. We're more interested in your potential, problem-solving ability and willingness to learn than in how many technologies you already know.
