Role Overview
As a Junior Mechanical Engineer at Focused Energy, you will support the design, development, and integration of mechanical systems across our innovative projects. This position is ideal for early-career engineers eager to work with advanced experimental hardware and develop critical skills in mechanical design, system integration, and laboratory infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with senior engineers, contributing to core design tasks, CAD modeling, and documentation while learning the processes that underpin the development of complex systems.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design Support
Assist in designing and developing mechanical components and assemblies.
Create and update 3D models and drawings using Autodesk Inventor.
Support mechanical layouts and equipment integration within laboratory settings.
Contribute to the development and assembly of experimental mechanical systems.
CAD Modeling & Documentation
Produce engineering drawings and models under the guidance of senior engineers.
Assist in creating Bill of Materials (BOM) and documentation packages.
Ensure accurate structuring and management of design files within the Vault system.
Prototype Development & Testing
Support the build and assembly of experimental systems.
Assist in prototype testing and troubleshooting.
Collaborate with technicians and engineers during system integration and builds.
Engineering Analysis Support
Help with essential engineering calculations for structure, thermal loads, and mechanical tolerances.
Contribute to preparation of documentation for design reviews.
Cross-Team Collaboration
Work alongside electrical, mechanical, and controls engineers on integrated systems.
Participate in design reviews and engineering discussions.
Support multidisciplinary projects and teams.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
Basic experience with 3D CAD software (Autodesk Inventor preferred)
Strong interest in mechanical system design and experimental hardware
Solid problem-solving and analytical skills
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
Desirable Experience
Internship or university project experience involving mechanical design
Hands-on experience with laboratory or prototype systems
Familiarity with vacuum systems, instrumentation, or precision mechanical assemblies
Basic understanding of engineering documentation and design processes
