Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Junior Hydrologist to work as an integrated member of our Water Resources Team in the Yukon and British Columbia supporting our expanding hydrology and hydrometrics programs across Canada. This role offers a balanced mix of fieldwork and desktop hydrology tasks.

You will collect, manage, and interpret hydrometric and environmental data while supporting hydrologic assessments, modeling, reporting, and permitting efforts. You will work alongside experienced hydrologists, technicians, and engineers who will mentor you as you grow in your career. If you enjoy both analytical work and hands-on fieldwork in beautiful, remote environments, this role is for you.

The successful candidate can be in Burnaby or Sidney, British Columbia but preferences will be given to those who reside in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct hydrology and hydrometric fieldwork, with on‑site or remote support from experienced team members.
  • Travel to remote locations by truck, boat, helicopter, or foot.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain hydrometric instruments, sensors, data loggers, and associated field equipment.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate field notes, safety documentation, and data logs.
  • Exercise sound judgment and problem‑solving skills in remote and dynamic field environments.
  • Actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environment Program to support a strong safety culture.
  • Endure long, physically and mentally demanding field days while maintaining a positive, solutions‑focused attitude.
  • Perform assigned technical tasks efficiently and accurately using standard methods and techniques.
  • Manage, process, and interpret hydrometric and environmental field data using appropriate software tools.
  • Apply GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS) and data analysis methods to support hydrologic assessments.
  • Assist with hydrologic and hydraulic assessments, water resource permitting applications, and environmental impact assessments.
  • Prepare field summaries, technical memorandums, and contribute to reports such as Environmental Assessments, Technical Data Reports, and Permitting Applications.
  • Support the preparation of proposals and other project documentation.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • A basic understanding of the general concepts of hydrology and surface water processes.
  • Experience with data analysis, Excel, and GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS).
  • Experience with Aquarius, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, R, MATLAB, or programming is an asset, not a requirement.
  • Familiarity with hydrometric equipment.
  • Ability to manage time to meet project schedules and budgets.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent) and be willing to travel within BC and Canada to remote locations as required. Comfortable driving long distances, remote roads, and in variable conditions.
  • Experience with geospatial databases, big‑data management, statistical analyses, advanced programming, and/or water quality is considered an asset.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in hydrology, environmental science, earth science, water resources, civil engineering, or a related field; or a technical diploma with hydrology/hydrometrics experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of related industry experience.
  • Registration, or eligibility for registration, with EGBC as an EIT/GIT or with ASTTBC as an AScT is considered an asset.
  • Valid safety training certificates relevant to fieldwork are an asset.
  • Previous hydrometric, environmental monitoring, or field‑based data collection experience is an asset.

Typical office environment involves working with computers and remaining relatively sedentary.
