Transforming businesses with innovative custom software development, AI and data engineering services.
The Role
Develop and maintain Java backend services for a banking and payments platform. Responsibilities include building RESTful APIs and event-driven services with Spring Boot and Kafka, managing SQL databases, containerizing applications with Docker, and configuring Kubernetes and Helm deployments. The engineer will contribute to design, planning, testing, code reviews, observability, and production reliability while collaborating within an Agile engineering squad.
Summary Generated by Built In

DVT is one of Africa’s leading software development and technology consulting companies. Our software engineers work with leading organisations across South Africa and internationally, delivering innovative solutions to complex business challenges.

We are committed to technical excellence, continuous learning and knowledge sharing. Our people have access to internal training, certifications, communities of practice and opportunities to work alongside some of South Africa’s most experienced technology professionals.

DVT is looking for experienced Java Software Engineers to join a new banking and payments technology initiative based in Cape Town.

You will be embedded within an established engineering squad and work closely with senior engineers, technical leadership, project management, release management and business analysis teams. The environment is collaborative, delivery-focused and suited to engineers who value quality, accountability and sound engineering judgement.

This is an initial 4 to 6 month contract opportunity, with the possibility of extension depending on project requirements.

What you will be working on
  • Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot within a new-build banking platform.

  • Work with proprietary in-house frameworks that integrate automatically with deployment, tracking, and tracing tooling.

  • Build and maintain Docker files, container configuration, and Helm charts for services (infrastructure and Terraform provisioning is managed by a dedicated in-house platform/cloud team).

  • Develop and consume Kafka-based event streams, including working across multiple topics in an event-driven architecture.

  • Write and maintain SQL against MySQL/Postgres databases.

  • Collaborate with a Senior/Principal Engineer and Team Lead within an existing squad, following Electrum's engineering standards and best practices.

  • Participate in spec-driven development, feeding requirements and context into AI tooling (Claude Code, enterprise licence) to support — not replace — engineering judgement on functional and non-functional requirements.

  • Apply AI-assisted development in an “AI-enabled, not AI-led” capacity: AI may support smaller, well-scoped features, while engineers retain ownership and accountability for core/critical banking functionality.

Job requirementsCore Technical Stack
  • 5+ years of commercial software development experience

  • 4+ years of hands-on Java development experience, comfortable across a range of versions; Electrum's current proprietary systems run primarily on Java 22, though some legacy client systems span Java 11–25

  • 3+ years of experience building applications using Spring Boot

  • Maven as the build tool, with JFrog Artifactory for artefact management.

  • SQL, MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.

  • RESTful API design and development.

  • Apache Kafka - practical understanding of event-driven systems and multi-topic consumption (deep Kafka expertise not required, but candidates should understand event-driven design principles).

  • Docker - working knowledge of containerised environments, Dockerfiles, and deployment configuration.

  • Kubernetes / Helm charts - comfortable working with container orchestration configuration (infrastructure itself is managed by Electrum's platform team).

  • TypeScript - working knowledge of related front-end/tooling components of the stack.

Advantageous experience
  • Experience within banking, payments, financial services or another regulated environment

  • Familiarity with JFrog Artifactory

  • Working knowledge of TypeScript

  • Experience with observability, monitoring, distributed tracing or Elastic tooling

  • Experience working with proprietary frameworks or internal development platforms

  • Exposure to responsible AI-assisted software development practices

Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Engineering or a related field

Advantageous Certifications
  • Oracle Java Certification

  • AWS Cloud Practitioner or Associate level certifications

  • Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)

  • Apache Kafka or event driven architecture related certifications

  • Relevant cloud, containerisation or software engineering certifications

Location and working model
  • This is a hybrid opportunity based in Riverlands, Cape Town.

  • Candidates must be available to attend agreed office days for sprint planning, design discussions, whiteboarding and team collaboration. Some flexibility to work remotely is available outside of the team’s core office days.

  • Occasional travel to client sites may be required for workshops, testing or design sessions.

  • Cape Town based candidates will be strongly preferred.

Contract information
  • Initial contract duration of 4 to 6 months

  • Potential extension based on project requirements

  • Structured onboarding into the client’s frameworks and engineering environment

  • Embedded within an established engineering squad

Why join DVT?
  • Work on meaningful enterprise-scale technology initiatives

  • Collaborate with experienced engineers and technical leaders

  • Gain exposure to modern Java, cloud and event-driven technologies

  • Access continuous learning, internal training and knowledge sharing opportunities

  • Join a consulting environment where your technical contribution is visible and valued

  • Become part of a strong engineering culture focused on growth, collaboration and delivery excellence

If you are passionate about Java engineering and want to contribute to modern banking and payments technology, we would like to hear from you.
