Vanguard’s Internal Audit and SOX department is hiring an IT Audit Director to lead our Global Technology Audit Services (GTAS) team. This is a strategic leadership role for a technology leader with a strong foundation in internal audit and a passion for developing people and driving impactful change. The Director will oversee a team responsible for delivering risk-based audits and consulting engagements across Vanguard’s diverse technology ecosystem, fostering a collaborative, agile, and growth-oriented environment.

The role reports to the GTAS Department Head and serves as a trusted advisor to senior technology leaders, helping to strengthen Vanguard’s global control environment through thoughtful risk insights and strategic influence. Audit coverage could include working with key business segments within the IT Division, such as Global Technology Operations (GTO), Chief Data & Analytics Office (CDAO), and/or Chief Technology Office (CTO)—which represent core areas like infrastructure, data strategy, and technology innovation—but is subject to change based on business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, evaluate, and supervise crew. Provide mentorship and training as necessary to develop crew. Set performance standards, review performance, and make informed compensation decisions in accordance with all applicable Human Resources policies and procedures.

  • Lead the audit and consulting plan for assigned technology divisions and functions, including defining scope, objectives, and work plans; adjust as needed.

  • Oversee multiple concurrent engagements, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality work and actionable recommendations. Approve objectives, scope, and final reports.

  • Communicate the status and results of the audit and consulting plan as well as enterprise-wide topics to various levels of management. Influence leaders within aligned technology divisions and functional areas to act on recommendations that strengthen the control environment and drive meaningful process improvements.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with technology and risk partners; share insights on industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices.

  • Contribute to reporting for senior management, audit committees, regulators, and external auditors.

  • Lead one or more department projects to deliver on operational and strategic goals.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of eight years related work experience. Experience with technology audit, risk, or controls (i.e., operational audits, internal audits, advisory/consulting, controls/compliance/legal); people leadership experience preferred.

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. IT degree or concentration preferred. Graduate degree preferred.

  • CIA, CISSP, CCSP, CEH, CompTIA Security+, GSEC, CISA, PMP, ITIL, AWS Cloud Architect, or other professional designation preferred.

  • Deep IT experience in multiple areas (e.g., applications, cloud, network, cybersecurity, access control, vulnerability management, automation and artificial intelligence).

  • Exceptional relationship-building and communication skills, with the ability to influence, persuade, and present findings and insights to senior technology leaders with confidence and clarity.

  • Proven success in complex, fast-paced environments with strong project execution skills—prioritizing tasks, managing multiple projects, anticipating next steps, and adapting to changing scope.

  • Data analytics literacy and leadership, with the ability to advance the team’s learning curve, drive adoption, and ensure effective deployment of analytics capabilities in audit processes.
