The Role

The Position:

The IP Counsel is responsible for research collaboration agreements, license agreements, invention harvesting, patent portfolio management, and assisting with freedom-to-operate analyses and IP litigation. Other key responsibilities will include:

  • Partnering closely with Veracyte’s R&D department
  • Supporting contracting for all R&D collaborations
  • Building out Veracyte’s patent program
  • Leading Veracyte’s patent committee meetings
  • Managing outside IP counsel
  • Overflow support for Contracts Counsel


This position will report to the Deputy General Counsel based in San Francisco.  Occasional travel to R&D meetings in South San Francisco or San Diego offices encouraged. Applicants will be considered for the IP Counsel role, an Associate Director level position.  Applicants with significant years of legal experience will be considered for the Sr. IP Counsel role, a Director level position.

 

Qualifications:

  • JD (or equivalent) with active bar membership, with at least 5 years of legal experience
  • Life sciences technology transactions (diagnostic, medical device, CRO, biotech or pharma) experience required
  • Law firm training in technology transactions practice strongly preferred
  • Patent bar preferred
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Exceptional legal drafting skills with an affinity for using language to achieve compromise
  • Ability to analyze complex business and legal issues/risks in order to advance practical solutions
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to take a business and client-focused approach to difficult decisions – including thinking “outside the box” on practical solutions
  • Able to engage team members in order to achieve objectives
  • Strong prioritization skills; ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment

The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units. Veracyte is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.

Pay range

$192,000$220,000 USD
