OTPP manages ~$38B of assets out of the London office, of which ~C$8B is in the Private Capital portfolio. OTPP has been an investor in Europe since 1992, with the London office launched in 2007 to gain enhanced access to opportunities in EMEA.

Private Capital is the investment department within OTPP focused on private equity investing, with global Assets Under Management of $61B. We invest across three core sectors (Financial Services, Technology, and Services) and focus on control and co-control investments. Our European portfolio includes companies such as Busy Bees, 7IM, Donte Group, Max Matthiessen, Group.One and Veonet.

The Opportunity 

We are seeking an Associate for our Private Capital (“PC”) team. Based in London, you will be an integral part of the team focused on direct investments in Europe. You will play a key role in evaluating potential investment opportunities, executing transactions and handling existing portfolio investments that make up our European direct private equity investment strategy. 

What you'll do 

Your time will be spent evaluating new investments and determining whether the company represents an attractive investment opportunity. Among other things, the analysis of investments includes conducting industry and company research, managing third-party advisors, building sophisticated financial models, reviewing and analysing due diligence materials, and preparing internal support materials and written recommendations to PC’s Investment Committee. 

Once a transaction has been completed, you will remain involved with the business, potentially attending board meetings as an observer, and will work with the management team and the board of directors to implement value-enhancing initiatives. In addition, you will work directly with management on various initiatives as required, including with respect to mergers and acquisitions, debt refinancings, budgeting and other strategic projects. 

You get to play an active role in assisting in and identifying target investment sectors and generating proprietary deal flow in specific sectors. Activities will include conducting desk research, working with bankers and consultants, and attending conferences. 

What you'll need 

  • An undergraduate degree  

  • 2-3 years relevant work experience – such as in private equity, investment banking, or consulting 

  • Very strong financial modelling and valuation skills 

  • Robust analytical and quantitative skills and ability to perform in-depth, creative, critical analysis 

  • Deep understanding of fundamental investment analysis 

  • Ability to develop a good knowledge of the economic/business characteristics, conditions and trends of a broad range of industries 

  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written, with solid presentation skills 

  • Can-do attitude, hunger to learn and grow, maturity and composure

  • Great teammate with strong interpersonal skills, able to establish and build relationships 

  • Self-motivated with the ability to meet tight timelines and operate in a highly complex and demanding work environment 

  • Unquestioned personal and professional integrity 

  • Fluency in English is essential. Other Western European languages considered an asset 

  • Ability and willingness to travel
