The opportunity

We are seeking 4 new Associates to join our Private Capital (“PC”) team across multiple sector pods. Based in Toronto, you will be an integral part of a team focused on direct investments in North America. You will play a key role in evaluating potential investment opportunities, executing transactions, conducting sector research including transaction pipeline building, and supporting portfolio company management.

Who you'll work with

You will work with a diverse team of professionals based in Toronto, focused on evaluating new opportunities and managing investments. In your role, you will engage with management teams of portfolio companies, fund partners, investment bankers, board directors, and advisors. You will be aligned to one of three sector pods:

Financial Services: The Financial Services team invests across sub-sectors including insurance, wealth & asset management, lending, professional services, and cards & payments, with a particular need to understand the regulatory, AI, data and digitization themes reshaping the sector. You will work with sector specialists and portfolio company management to evaluate new investments, support value creation initiatives, and develop sub-sector views across priority areas.

Services: A team focused on commercial & residential, industrial & infrastructure, and durable customer services. You will work alongside experienced deal professionals on platform and add-on acquisitions, engaging directly with management teams to drive operational improvements and growth.

Technology: A team focused on investments in durable software and technology-enabled services businesses. Sub-sectors of focus include vertical and horizontal software (including healthcare IT, financial services, Office of the CFO, supply chain, and GRC), cybersecurity software and services, managed service providers (MSPs), and digital transformation. You will work alongside experienced deal professionals on platform and add-on investments, engaging with management teams to support growth, operational improvement, and technology-enabled value creation.

What you'll do

  • You will evaluate new investments and determine whether the company represents an attractive investment opportunity.  The analysis of investments includes conducting industry and company research, managing third-party advisors, building sophisticated financial models, arranging debt financing, reviewing legal documents, reviewing and analyzing due diligence materials, and preparing internal support materials and written recommendations to PC’s Investment Committee.

  • Once a transaction has been completed, you will remain involved with the business, potentially attending board meetings as an observer, and will work with the management team and the board of directors to implement value-enhancing initiatives. In addition, you will work directly with management on various initiatives as required, including with respect to mergers and acquisitions, debt refinancing, budgeting and other strategic projects.

  • You will help develop and refresh sub-sector investment theses through deep dives, market mapping, primary research, target screening, valuation benchmarking, and identification of key diligence themes. Activities will include conducting desk research, working with bankers and consultants, and attending conferences. There is also the expectation that you assist in building and maintaining relationships with fund partners.

What you'll need

  • Minimum 2 years related work experience (such as private equity, investment banking, M&A advisory, management consulting, or corporate development)

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree from a university with a focus on business / finance / accounting / investment analysis, or equivalent experience

  • Experience in developing financial models (LBO, DCF, etc.) from the ground up to aid in investment valuation, transaction structuring, and financing decisions.

  • Experience evaluating companies, transactions, or investment themes in one or more of Financial Services, Services, or Technology is considered an asset.

  • Very strong analytical and quantitative skills and ability to perform in-depth, creative, critical analysis

  • Comfort using data and AI-enabled tools to support research, analysis, diligence and portfolio company work

  • Deep understanding of fundamental investment analysis

  • Experience in the investment process, including conducting due diligence, arranging debt financing and negotiating documentation

  • Ability to develop a good knowledge of the economic/business characteristics, conditions and trends of the target sector

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with solid presentation skills

  • Collaborative teammate with strong interpersonal skills, able to establish and build relationships

  • Self-motivated, and possess unquestioned personal and professional integrity

  • Ability to meet tight timelines and operate in a highly complex and demanding work environment

  • Ability and willingness to travel
