Investigative Reporter – City Journal (NYC)

Manhattan Institute for Policy Research (MI) is a community of scholars, journalists, activists, and civic leaders who are united by a shared commitment to advancing economic opportunity, individual liberty, and the rule of law in America and its great cities. We are seeking a like-minded Investigative Reporter who will focus on misgovernance and public accountability in the city and state of New York.  

New York City and state have struggled for years with waste, fraud, abuse, and political malpractice that benefits powerful interests at the expense of everyday New Yorkers. In this role, you will be responsible for bringing these stories to light, and using them to create public accountability.

A successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of covering a diversity of topics using a variety of techniques, especially on-the-ground reporting. Topics of particular interest to this initiative include welfare fraud and failure, public safety, education, and union abuse.

This is an “impact journalism” role, with the goal of not only reporting the facts, but making real and immediate change. Vital is an ability to tell compelling stories, and identify elements of those stories which will effectively drive reform. Fluency with social media and ability to push stories into the public consciousness also essential to success.

Required qualifications 

  • New York City-based, including significant experience reporting on the city. 
  • Three-plus years of experience in investigative journalism or similar role. 
  • A proven ability to source, investigate, and break significant stories. 
  • Experience with document- and record-based reporting.  
  • Dogged commitment to accurate reporting of the facts. 
  • Strong media presence; comfortable doing TV, radio, and podcast hits. Fluency with social media, especially X presence.
  • Willingness to travel for on-the-ground reporting. 
  • Familiarity with the work of CJ, and MI, and a desire to work in support of MI’s mission.

The salary range for this position is $100,000 to $200,000/year. The salary offered to a candidate will depend on skills, experience, and education.
