Role Summary
This role leads the design and delivery of scalable data exchange across a broad set of systems and vendors. You’ll be an integration SME, advising clients on sound architecture and integration patterns, incorporating agentic logic where applicable. You will be an expert on healthcare interoperability standards (HL7 v2, FHIR, X12/EHI) and modern API-first patterns. Your expertise and advanced communication skills will influence a broad set of data owners and stakeholders who may have competing priorities, legacy constraints, and high governance needs. Success requires deep technical credibility and a proven track record of defining and evangelizing standards, driving alignment, building robust integrations, and enabling cross-team delivery.
What You’ll Do
- Own integration architecture and patterns: Define scalable, secure integration approaches (API-first, event-driven where appropriate, batch/streaming, canonical models) that balance near-term delivery with long-term supportability and scalability.
- Deliver end-to-end integrations: Lead integrations from discovery and requirements through build, test, go-live, and support; manage dependencies and risks across multiple systems and teams.
- Implement and guide APIs: Design and build APIs, define specifications, versioning, error handling, and documentation standards.
- Lead interoperability standards adoption: Drive implementation decisions and best practices for HL7 v2, FHIR, and X12 transactions; translate standards into pragmatic interface designs.
- Influence and evangelize: Partner with data owners, security, compliance, product, engineering, and client stakeholders to align on data sharing, definitions, governance, and timelines, especially when stakeholders are resistant to change.
- Technical discovery and client consultation: Run high-stakes discovery sessions and devise clear integration strategies, solution options, and trade-offs for technical and executive audiences.
- Operational excellence: Establish integration and data migration runbooks and observability practices for transaction logging, monitoring, alerting, and data reconciliation; drive root cause analysis and durable fixes for production issues.
- Quality and reliability: Define testing strategies and support UAT; ensure data accuracy, reliability, and continuity during migrations and steady-state operations.
- Cross-functional leadership: Represent integration status, risks, and recommendations to leadership; escalate blockers with options and clear asks; build repeatable playbooks and raise the technical bar.
What you bring
- Experience: 7+ years in integration engineering, interoperability, technical consulting, or systems integration, ideally in healthcare, payer/provider networks, or health tech SaaS.
- Healthcare interoperability: Hands-on experience designing/implementing integrations using HL7 v2 and/or FHIR; familiarity with X12 (e.g., 270/271, 276/277, 834, 835) and HIPAA-related considerations.
- Integration architecture: Strong grasp of patterns for system-to-system integration (synchronous/asynchronous, batch, queues/events, canonical models) and making sound tradeoffs.
- Integration Design and development: Ability to design and build APIs and related integration components; strong comfort with API design/documentation and testing tools (e.g., OpenAPI/Swagger, Postman) and at least one modern backend language/framework (e.g., Java/Kotlin, C#/.NET, Python, or JavaScript/TypeScript/Node). Experience with authentication/authorization patterns (e.g., OAuth2/JWT) and secure data exchange.
- Delivery ownership: Proven ability to own delivery outcomes and work prioritization while managing ambiguity and driving measurable results in complex, multi-system environments.
- Stakeholder influence: Demonstrated ability to align and influence cross-functional stakeholders (including challenging data owners) through clear communication, persistence, and structured decision-making.
- Problem solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills across distributed systems; ability to diagnose integration failures, data quality issues, and partner interoperability gaps.
- Written communication: Ability to author clear technical specs, interface agreements, runbooks, and executive-ready status updates.

- Experience with EHR common workflows (ADT, scheduling, results, claims, eligibility, prior auth).
- Experience with interface engines and iPaaS tools (e.g., Rhapsody, Mirth/NextGen Connect, MuleSoft, Boomi) and/or cloud integration services.
- Experience with cloud platforms and modern delivery practices (CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code concepts, containerization, SRE/observability).
- Experience supporting regulated environments, data governance, and security reviews for integrations.
- Familiarity with emerging agentic technology and how it can support integration delivery, data governance, and ETL.
Success in the first 90 days
- Build trust with key stakeholders across internal teams and key clients.
- Assess current integration portfolio and identify 5 highest-impact improvements.
- Create or refine reference architecture and standards (API conventions, error handling, versioning, data contracts) and socialize them with data owners and delivery teams.
- Own delivery of at least one complex client/partner integration milestone end-to-end, with clear risks, mitigations, and executive-level communication.

- Travel: Up to 10% (as needed for client meetings, go-lives, or team offsites).

Compensation & Benefits
The expected total cash compensation for this role is market-driven, with an expected starting salary of $130,000 to $160,000 plus 10% bonus. Salary is ultimately determined based on a candidate's skills, expertise, and experience.
