The Role
Designs, deploys, operates, and supports virtualization, cloud, network, Linux, and Windows infrastructure across internal and customer environments. Manages Proxmox clusters, Ceph storage, Azure infrastructure, migrations, backups, monitoring, capacity planning, and incident remediation. Builds automation and standardized configurations while enforcing change control, rollback planning, security, reliability, and documentation. The role also supports infrastructure procurement, disaster recovery testing, and scalable, repeatable platform delivery.
Summary Generated by Built In
This is a remote position.
The Infrastructure / Cloud Engineer is responsible for the design support, deployment and ongoing
operation of virtualization, cloud and network infrastructure across internal and customer
environments. The role sits at the senior technical tier alongside the CIS Admin function and
handles the infrastructure and cloud workloads that fall outside day-to-day server administration.
The position balances build and project delivery with operational reliability, with an emphasis on
stability, repeatability, security and documentation. The focus is on delivering well-structured,
productized infrastructure that is easy to support at scale rather than bespoke one-off designs.
Key Performance Indicators
• Infrastructure and migration projects delivered on time and within scope
• Improved platform stability, performance and consistency across environments
• Predictable, low-risk change execution under approved change control
• Reduction in reactive infrastructure incidents
• Accurate, current infrastructure documentation maintained in Nuclino
Personal Attributes
• Operates without hand-holding and thinks in systems, not tickets
• Comfortable challenging legacy design decisions and reducing complexity
• Focused on repeatable, productized outcomes over bespoke builds
• Reliable, predictable and process driven
• Takes responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks
• Strong written and spoken English for remote collaboration
Requirements
Required Experience & Essential Skills
Understanding and practical experience with:
Essential
• Senior-level Linux systems administration (Debian preferred)
• Proxmox VE administration including clustering, storage and Ceph
• Virtualization, storage and backup concepts at depth
• Cloud infrastructure administration, including Microsoft Azure and Azure networking
• Networking fundamentals: VLANs, bridging, routing, SD-WAN, firewalls
• Infrastructure automation and scripting (Bash, Python, Ansible or similar)
• High discipline with change control and documentation
• Capacity planning, workload sizing and migration planning
Desirable
• Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) and Cove / Datto backup platforms
• Container platforms (Docker, Portainer)
• Monitoring and alerting systems (for example Zabbix)
• Sophos XGS firewall administration
• Microsoft certification (supports partner benefit thresholds)
• Hardware lifecycle planning and procurement input
• Experience working remotely with Australian-based teams
Candidates without real Proxmox VE experience are not suitable for this role.
Role & Responsibilities:
Infrastructure & Virtualisation
• Deploy, configure and maintain Proxmox VE clusters, including storage and Ceph
• Manage virtual machine lifecycle across internal and customer environments
• Support and maintain Linux and Windows server infrastructure at scale
• Design and support network infrastructure: VLANs, routing, SD-WAN and firewalls
Cloud & Migration
• Administer cloud infrastructure across Azure and hosted environments
• Plan and execute infrastructure and cloud migrations with defined cutover and rollback
plans
• Size and plan workloads to balance performance against cost
Automation & Standardisation
• Build automation for provisioning, patching and fleet management
• Develop and maintain standardized, repeatable infrastructure configurations
• Identify opportunities to consolidate and rationalize infrastructure
Change Control & Documentation
• Raise change controls for all work impacting production environments
• Seek approval from GM or CTO prior to implementation – each change must include an
implementation plan, risk assessment, roll-back plan and testing plan
• Maintain accurate infrastructure documentation in Nuclino
Reliability & Backup
• Monitor infrastructure health, capacity and resource usage
• Support backup and disaster recovery, including periodic recovery testing
• Investigate and remediate infrastructure incidents escalated from Level 2
Role Boundaries & Expectations
• This role executes approved infrastructure work within defined controls
• No production work is carried out without approved change control
• Architecture direction and risk acceptance remain with the GM and CTO
• Success is measured by stability, project delivery, documentation quality and predictable
execution
