Value Proposition

As part of the Enterprise Automation and Technology Enablement team at First Citizens Bank, the Senior Data Automation Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, configuring, and maintaining automated data workflows, integrations, reporting solutions, and operational automation platforms. This individual will possess strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills, along with experience across the software development lifecycle, to support multiple business initiatives, develop standard operating procedures (SOPs), and drive day-to-day automation capabilities.

About the Team

The Data Automation and Engineering team enables business and technology functions through scalable automation solutions, workflow orchestration, data integration, process optimization, and operational analytics. The team is focused on reducing manual effort, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing data-driven decision-making across the organization.

Impact

This position resides within the Enterprise Technology organization supporting the design, development, automation, and ongoing maintenance of data pipelines, workflow platforms, reporting frameworks, and integration solutions. The role will be responsible for identifying automation opportunities, implementing scalable solutions, and supporting operational excellence initiatives. This is an individual contributor role

Key Deliverables (Duties and Responsibilities)

• Document automation runbooks, playbooks, technical procedures, and operational processes.
• Collaborate with Business, Application, Infrastructure, Data Engineering, and Support teams to gather requirements and implement automation solutions for larger platforms like SailPoint
• Support operational teams by developing reusable automation frameworks and self-service capabilities.
• Design, develop, and maintain automated workflows using scripting, APIs, orchestration tools, and low-code/no-code platforms where applicable.
• Build and maintain data pipelines for extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL/ELT) processes.
• Develop automation for operational reporting, data validation, reconciliation, and monitoring activities.
• Create dashboards and reporting solutions to provide actionable business insights.
• Monitor automation jobs, troubleshoot failures, and implement proactive improvements.
• Ensure adherence to security policies, regulatory requirements, data governance standards, and audit controls.
• Optimize business processes through automation and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Support enterprise AI, analytics, and intelligent automation programs.
• Develop operational metrics, KPI reporting, and executive dashboards.
• Implement automation solutions that improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.

Skills and Qualifications (Functional and Technical Skills)

Functional Skills

• Strong expertise in business process analysis and automation solution development.
• Excellent understanding of workflow automation, process orchestration, and task automation.
• Ability to translate business requirements into scalable automation solutions.
• Strong analytical thinking and data problem-solving capabilities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Technical / Business Skills

• 4+ years of experience in data engineering, automation engineering, business process automation, or related technology roles.
• Strong knowledge of Python, PowerShell, SQL, or other scripting languages.
• Experience with API integrations, REST services, and enterprise application connectivity.
• Experience developing ETL/ELT pipelines and data transformation workflows.
• Knowledge of workflow orchestration and automation platforms (Power Automate, UiPath, Automation Anywhere, Apache Airflow, etc.).
• Experience with database technologies such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or Snowflake.
• Data modeling, data quality, and data validation experience.
• Dashboard and reporting development using Power BI, Tableau, or similar analytics tools.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
• Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
• Experience with source control tools such as Git.
• Monitoring, alerting, and operational support experience.
• Knowledge of AI-enabled automation and intelligent process automation solutions is preferred.
• Familiarity with data governance, security, and compliance requirements.
