Description
BLOX is a Design-Manufacture-Construct (DMC) company headquartered in Bessemer, Alabama. We design and build modular buildings, building components and sub-assemblies as products in a controlled factory environment, then deliver and install them in the field. This approach lets us move faster, hold tighter quality, and build more predictably than traditional construction. Our vision is to create a DMC industry, without silos, that does more with less, beautifully.
What You’ll Design
You’ll design the spaces and products people use every day inside healthcare, mission-critical and other facilities: patient bathrooms, exam rooms, headwalls and other building products. These are physical products for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, designed, fabricated and assembled in our Bessemer factory and delivered to building sites around the country. Every design must work for the patients, staff and technicians who use it, on our shop floor where it’s built, on the truck, and in the client’s finished space.
Position Summary
The Industrial Designer II shapes how our building products look, work and feel for the people who use them, then carries that design intent all the way to the factory floor. You’ll join a new product launch team and lead concept development, form, ergonomics, configuration and materials, while partnering with engineering and manufacturing so every design is efficient to build, transport and install. This role connects user-centered design with manufacturability, cost and quality.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead concept development for new products and refine existing designs for usability, ergonomics, configuration, materials and cost.
• Research how patients, staff and maintenance technicians use our products, and translate those insights into design decisions.
• Develop sketches, 3D models, renderings and physical or virtual prototypes to explore and communicate design options.
• Define color, material and finish (CMF) choices that balance durability, cleanability, appearance, cost and availability.
• Build production-ready 3D models and drawings, and partner with engineering to complete fabrication files, specification sheets and bills of material (BOMs) before release to production.
• Apply design-for-manufacturing (DfM) and design-for-assembly (DfA) principles so products are efficient to build, inspect, ship and install.
• Maintain design revisions so models, drawings and BOMs stay traceable and aligned through change control.
• Work daily with manufacturing, quality, supply chain and program management to resolve build issues and feed lessons back into the design.
• Track design-related rework, scrap and delays, and lead continuous-improvement actions to reduce them.
• Support prototyping, first-article builds and product launch readiness.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Product Design or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 3–6 years of experience designing physical products that went into production, such as fixtures, appliances, furniture, equipment or building products.
• A portfolio showing concept development through production, including how designs were refined for manufacturing.
• Strong 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks, Inventor, Rhino, NX or similar) and the ability to produce production-ready models and drawings.
• Working knowledge of fabrication methods (sheet metal, structural steel, welding, fastening, molding) and tolerancing.
• Experience with ergonomics and user-centered design for physical products.
• Ability to work on the shop floor with production teams to solve problems in real time.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience designing plumbing fixtures, appliances, healthcare environments or other products used in buildings.
• Experience with modular, prefabricated or offsite construction products, or other configurable built products.
• Experience creating and maintaining BOMs and managing engineering change control.
• Rendering and visualization skills (KeyShot or similar).
• Familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Experience supporting a new product launch from concept through production.
• Exposure to Revit or other building information modeling (BIM) tools.
Work Environment
• On-site at our Bessemer, AL facility, splitting time between the design office and the manufacturing floor.
• Must be able to walk the production floor and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
