Position Description: FlexGen is looking for an experienced Indirect Tax Manager to lead and manage the organization's indirect tax-related activities. This role will serve as a business advisor and partner to our internal clients with the aim of maximizing engagement and achieve qualitative outcomes ensuring compliance with tax laws. The Indirect Tax Manager will be expected to develop and implement effective tax processes while complying with applicable laws and regulations. This involves staying up-to-date with tax law changes.


Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead the company’s indirect tax function, including multistate sales and use tax compliance, tax determination, reporting, audits, controls, and process improvement.
  • Manage the accurate and timely preparation, review, and filing of state and local sales and use tax returns, including oversight of registrations, tax notices, account maintenance, and external service providers.
  • Serve as the functional owner of Avalara and related NetSuite configurations, including tax rules, codes, jurisdictional mappings, exemption logic, reporting, system testing, and enhancements.
  • Evaluate and document the indirect tax treatment of customer and vendor transactions, including spare parts, software, services, commissioning, maintenance, and other complex transaction components.
  • Manage exemption certificates, resale certificates, direct-pay permits, and other supporting tax documentation, including validation, renewal, retention, and application within company systems.
  • Partner with accounting, legal, sales, procurement, project management, and operations to resolve tax issues and advise on contract language, invoicing, vendor charges, use tax, exemptions, and other transaction-related tax matters.
  • Monitor changes in indirect tax laws and guidance, assess their impact on the business, and develop and maintain related policies, procedures, decision frameworks, and internal controls.
  • Design and implement scalable processes, automation, and system improvements that enhance tax accuracy, reduce manual activity, strengthen controls, and support growth into new jurisdictions and business activities.

Position Requirements:

  • Utilize AI-driven tools and workflows to streamline processes, automate tasks, and improve overall performance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, taxation, or a related field.
  • Seven or more years of progressive accounting or tax experience.
  • Demonstrated experience independently managing sales and use tax compliance, taxability determinations, exemption documentation, registrations, notices, and audit matters across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Experience evaluating the indirect tax treatment of complex products, software, services, and customer and vendor transactions preferred.
  • Experience owning or administering an indirect tax technology platform, preferably Avalara, and supporting tax configurations within an ERP system; NetSuite experience is strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to develop policies, document tax positions, design internal controls, and implement scalable process and system improvements.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret state and local tax laws and translate technical conclusions into practical business guidance.
  • Experience partnering with accounting, legal, sales, procurement, project management, and operations teams on transaction-related tax matters.
  • Prior experience in a project-based, technology, manufacturing, construction, or energy-related business is preferred.
  • Committed to meeting deadlines but able to pivot and prioritize as needed.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and other financial management software.
  • Exceptional client service along with the ability to develop excellent client relationships.
  • Strong leadership and personnel management skills.
  • Analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy, with organizational and leadership skills.
