POSITION – Hydro Operator - Class "B" Station
NUMBER OF POSITIONS: 1
LOCATION: NYSEG - NY - Plattsburgh
HOURLY RATE: $48.71 - $49.71
Duties:
Under directive supervision responsible for the operation of Hydro Power Stations.
Experience, Education and Special Information Required:
- Should have at least three years’ experience in Plant, Switchboard or Sub-station operation or equivalent in operating experience.
- Must have given satisfactory evidence that candidate possesses the necessary qualifications to perform all the duties needed for this job.
- Must be able to perform routine operations of moderate complexity and variety based on detailed instructions. Equivalent to about 2 years of high school.
- Must have practical working knowledge of the construction, maintenance and operation of Hydro Turbines, Turbine Auxiliaries, Generators and Sub-station equipment.
- Must have thorough knowledge of Station Mechanical and Electrical Tagging and Operating Rules.
- Must be familiar with Company's Safety Rules, Pressure Method of Resuscitation on or off the ground, and able to render practical First Aid.
- Must be thoroughly familiar with rules for the protection of people working on or near electrical conductors and apparatus.
Physical Qualifications:
- Normal health, physique and use of senses as indicated by passing the required physical examination given by a Company physician, including color perception.
- Strength adequate for arduous labor as circumstances may require.
Personal Qualifications:
- Must be able to deal with the public in pleasant, tactful manner.
- Should have no aversion to working in solitary situations.
- Must be willing to work extra and/or irregular hours and/or a shift schedule.
- Must be willing to work under unusual or special working conditions and surroundings, as well as the normal working conditions pertaining to this job.
- Must be particularly alert in observing hazards and avoiding accidents.
- Must be capable of making constructive recommendations as to new procedures and standards.
- Must be able to receive and transmit orders and instructions in such a manner as to inspire respect and confidence of both superiors and subordinates.

- This position will be awarded based on applicant qualifications. All applicants will be given a written test to gauge their practical working knowledge of the construction, maintenance and operation of Hydro Turbines, Turbine Auxiliaries, Generators and Sub-station
- The Hydro operator training program is formally structured for 2-years in duration, however the position requires that after the first 6-months as a Hydro Operator, the individual shall be able to safely and knowledgeably operate the Hydro generating units
- The accepted applicant will be given a “Hydro qualification guide” and “Hydro training manual”, to be utilized during the training. Weekly reviews will be scheduled with training team and supervision. It is expected that a certain amount of study and review might be necessary off company time depending on the applicant’s background and experience.
- As a member of the Hydro team, there is overtime required due to the nature of the work (Hydro power stations operate 24-hours a day and alarm response is required. In addition, after hours response to storms is sometimes necessary). After hour “call out” response will be reviewed and posted monthly. As part of the job, >20% callout response is required.
- As part of the interview, a demonstration of “hand tool” and “equipment” operation might be requested.
