Human Resources Manager – Law Firm
Location: Troy, MI (Michigan-based required with remote work flexibility)

Our dynamic, mid-sized IP law firm represents the world’s leading computer software and hardware innovators—from early-stage startups to unicorns and global Fortune 100 companies. Our work spans cutting-edge technologies including artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, video encoding, quantum computing, and cloud computing. With approximately 50 attorneys and 30 staff across Michigan, California, and several other states, we are entering a phase of continued growth and organizational maturity.
People are our most important assets, and we are looking for a Human Resources Manager who will be responsible for the day-to-day HR operations. The Manager will be responsible for executing the fundamentals—payroll support, onboarding and offboarding, assist with benefits administration, employee relations, and compliance.
This is a hands-on, mid-level role and is not intended for senior-level or executive candidates.
Key Responsibilities
Human Resources Management
- Lead HR functions: recruiting, onboarding, performance management, compensation, and benefits administration
- Oversee employee relations, disciplinary actions, investigations, and conflict resolution
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws
- Design and manage performance review processes and professional development programs
- Advise firm leadership on workforce planning and organizational design
Strategic Planning & Organizational Development
- Serve on a management team that supports the President and firm leadership
- Participate in strategic planning, growth initiatives, and change management efforts
- Support diversity, equity, inclusion, and retention initiatives
- Develop and report on HR metrics and dashboards, including staffing, turnover, engagement, and organizational health
Administrative Leadership
- Assist in the selection, implementation, and administration of a modern HRIS (e.g., BambooHR, Rippling)
- Partner with accounting and finance on payroll, benefits, budgeting, and compensation planning
- Support audits, insurance renewals, and risk management initiatives
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Management, or a related field (required)
- Professional certifications such as SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or PHR strongly preferred
Experience
- 5-8 years of practical HR experience in a law firm or other professional-services environment, with direct responsibility for day-to-day HR operations (payroll, onboarding/offboarding, benefits, compliance, and employee relations)
- Demonstrated experience leading HR operations, compliance, and employee relations
- Experience working directly with executive leadership
- Hands-on experience implementing and managing HRIS platforms (BambooHR, Rippling, or similar)
- Prior experience in an IP or patent-focused firm is a plus

- Analytical and systems-oriented, with experience building scalable HR processes
