Avesta Housing is seeking a detail-oriented and service-focused Human Resources Generalist to support key HR functions across the organization.

In this dynamic role, you’ll manage full-cycle recruitment for assigned positions while supporting onboarding, employee records, HRIS processes, and day-to-day HR operations. You’ll serve as a trusted resource for employees and managers, providing guidance on HR policies, supporting compliance and documentation, and helping ensure consistent, fair, and responsive HR practices. Every day, your work will help strengthen the employee experience and advance Avesta’s mission of creating and maintaining quality, affordable homes for people in need.

What We're Looking For

The person who is ready for this opportunity will meet the following requirements:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow established procedures consistently while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Customer-service oriented communication style, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Foundational understanding of HR concepts, terminology, workplace practices, and general HR functions.
  • Reliable follow-through, initiative, accountability, and sound judgment in completing tasks, escalating issues when appropriate.
  • The ability to work independently while also supporting team workflows and apply fair and consistent HR practices aligned with Avesta’s mission and commitment to inclusion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Communications, Organizational Development, or a related field preferred. Relevant experience may substitute for education.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in HR, recruitment, administrative support, or a related role required.
  • Experience working with confidential information and sensitive employee or applicant matters required.
  • Experience using HRIS, applicant tracking systems, or other employee record systems preferred.
  • Experience in nonprofit, affordable housing, property management, senior living, healthcare, human services, or other mission-driven environments preferred.
  • Comfort learning and using HR systems, applicant tracking systems, spreadsheets, and other technology tools; proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; experience with Paylocity preferred.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week), exempt position, and the annual salary range is $63,000 - $70,000.

Work Location 

This is a hybrid position. While the HR Generalist’s work can be done partly from home, the person in this role is expected to work at our main office, located at 307 Cumberland Avenue, Portland, Maine, and from other Avesta locations in greater Portland at least 2 days per week and as needed.
