Supervises operations of the med/surg unit and emergency department. Assumes accountability for ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, cost-effective services consistent with the needs of the hospital within budgetary guidelines. Serves as a resource person to staff, both clinically and administratively. Serves as the night shift representative for nursing management. The House Supervisor is an RN who functions globally as a support person. Coordinates utilization of resources including staff and equipment. Seeks to enhance the quality of care by acting as a consultant and mentor. Provides appropriate feedback to management regarding staff and clinical situations, as necessary. Contributes to an environment that promotes staff empowerment. Maintains awareness of applicable laws and/or regulations affecting areas of responsibility and assures compliance. Promotes a positive, professional image both internally and externally.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to the following)

 

CLINICAL EXCELLENCE/PATIENT CARE 

  • Assists when needed to coordinate staffing for current and on-coming shift. Completion of assignments to provide patients with safe and efficient care, while maintaining fiscal responsibility. 
  • Collaboratively coordinates the continuum of care across the multi-disciplinary team settings and serves as a resource person to staff clinically and administratively.
  • Able to act as an EPIC resource for the Inpatient and ER nursing patient care areas.
  • Perform data mining and analysis of patient charts as assigned by management. 
  • Coordinates and/or participates in huddles for acute nursing staff. 
  • Act as a Primary RN in the ER and Inpatient Departments when required.
  • Openness to innovative approaches, methods or technology in the ever-changing healthcare setting and helps promote this to all collaborators.
  • Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care. 
  • Provide a positive customer experience by involvement and resolution of customer concerns.
  • Assumes leadership role in case of security events (i.e., weather, fire, threats, etc.) and will follow incident command procedure if needed. 
  • Effectively apply technical knowledge to problem solve and function as a role model and resource person for other staff members.
  • Assists with the development and updating of policies and procedures.
  • Participate in staff education planning and teaching. 
  • Assists orientation of new employees.
  • Conducts house-wide rounds.

PATIENT EXPERIENCE AND PATIENT SAFETY

  • Completes and/or assists staff with the completion of occurrence reports (CRM) at the time of the occurrence in the Hospital Portal 
  • Completes the end of shift report at the conclusion of each shift and conducts face-to-face hand off with the on-coming staff. 
  • Provides service recovery, as necessary. 
  • Will be assigned specific performance improvement indicators, chart audits and other components for the Quality Improvement program. 

 

HOUSE SUPERVISOR LEADERSHIP

  • Participates in EMTALA chart audits and EMTALA education for staff. 
  • Assists with the development and provision of education for staff. 
  • Leads/ensures completion of competency verification for all nursing staff based on recommendations of nursing leadership

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Minimum of 3 years as a Registered Nurse (RN) in an acute care setting, preferably in Emergency Services 
  • Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Iowa 
  • Supervisor experience preferred 
  • BLS certification 
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, and TNCC required or willingness to complete within 12 months of hire

Skills Required
