Your Opportunity + Impact

We are passionate about developing the next generation and helping to provide the skills and experiences needed to help shape the next step of your career.  By working alongside engineers, designers, architects and technical staff who are experts in their field, we provide opportunities to help you discover your path.  Rather than report to a classroom, the student reports to the local business to job shadow and work for the business during their normal assigned classroom hours.  The student is not paid for their hours worked since they are receiving classroom credits for the internship.  However, after the normal school hours are completed in a week, the business and the student may elect to employ the student for additional hours.

While you will not be responsible for these tasks on your own, these are the various aspects of the Highway position that you will be shadowing:

Key Responsibilities

  • Gain exposure to a variety of transportation projects, including intersection improvements, interchanges, and pavement preservation projects.
  • Assist with drafting exercises and plan redlines to build proficiency in OpenRoads Designer (ORD).
  • Assist in completing computations, technical reports, and drawings.
  • Gain hands-on experience using OpenRoads Designer (ORD), Bentley MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other transportation design software.
  • Assist in preparing draft letters, specifications, and reports.
  • Conduct research in support of engineering documents and project development activities.
  • Learn state and federal transportation design standards and their application to highway projects.
  • Observe and participate in client and agency interactions to gain an understanding of project communication and coordination.
  • Gain exposure to the transportation project development process from planning through design and delivery.
  • Participate in career development activities, including professional resume review, interview preparation, and discussions about engineering career paths.

Education and Experience

  • High school senior student.
  • Ability and willingness to take direction from others
  • Strong planning, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
