Heard on the Street Tech Columnist
The Wall Street Journal’s Heard on the Street column is hiring a numerate writer to join our global team. This columnist will produce insightful, sophisticated, and sharp financial analysis and commentary about the biggest issues involving the technology community. You will cover some of the world's most influential companies—including Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and Nvidia—and explore the rapidly evolving space, defense, automotive, and media industries.
Heard is the Journal's home for financial analysis and commentary. We question conventional wisdom and dig deeply into the numbers to give professional investors and engaged readers deep insights into business, markets, and investing. This position can be based in San Francisco or New York, and reports to the Heard Editor.
You will:Generate original ideas for columns and take a sharp, authoritative view based on your own rigorous financial analysis.
Interrogate corporate disclosures, financial statements, and valuation models to find the hidden narrative behind major tech companies.
Produce quick, sophisticated commentary under tight daily deadlines in response to breaking news, earnings releases, and market shifts.
Break down the financial realities of the artificial-intelligence revolution, the commercialization of space, and the ongoing transformation of the media landscape.
Analyze the global transition to electric vehicles, self-driving tech, and related supply-chain bottlenecks like battery technology and rare-earth scarcity.
Collaborate with colleagues globally and amplify Heard's output across multiple platforms, including the Markets P.M. newsletter, the AI & Business newsletter, vertical-video series, and podcasts.
A proven track record as an experienced journalist with a strong analytical bent and a high comfort level with corporate finance, accounting and market dynamics.
Deep industry knowledge of the global technology sector, particularly the intersection of semiconductor chips, AI infrastructure, and enterprise software.
Excellent, engaging writing skills with the ability to distill complex financial concepts into a compelling, conversational voice.
Familiarity with the emerging nexus between Silicon Valley and the defense-industrial complex, automation, robotics, and aerospace.
A well-honed capacity to remain calm under pressure while handling multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
A collaborative mindset and the versatility to adapt your work for print, newsletters, audio, and video platforms.
