About UpDoc

At UpDoc, we are building the first clinically validated, physician-supervised AI agent that manages chronic diseases. We are an early-stage startup founded by Stanford physicians.

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Finance Lead to join our team as our first in-house finance hire. This is a foundational role for someone who wants to build the financial infrastructure of a fast-growing healthcare technology company from the ground up.

This is a remote role, with candidates preferred to be physically located in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Who You Are

You’re a hands-on finance leader who is equally comfortable building a financial model, managing grant budgets, reviewing the monthly close, digging into revenue cycle performance, preparing materials for leadership, and taking on operational work when needed.

You have strong financial and analytical fundamentals, but you’re not looking for a narrowly defined FP&A role. You want broad ownership and enjoy operating at the intersection of strategic finance, accounting, healthcare operations, grants, compliance, and company planning.

As our first in-house finance hire, you’ll be expected to be highly hands-on from day one while building the systems, processes, and financial discipline that can scale with UpDoc.

What You’ll Do
  • Own UpDoc’s financial planning and analysis, including annual planning, budgeting, forecasting, scenario modeling, and ongoing performance reporting.

  • Build and maintain the company’s financial model, providing leadership with clear visibility into revenue, expenses, cash, runway, headcount, and future capital requirements.

  • Own monthly and quarterly financial reporting and develop dashboards and reporting that make company performance easy to understand.

  • Partner with leadership on resource allocation, hiring plans, strategic investments, and other key operating decisions.

  • Oversee the accounting function and external accounting partners, ensuring accurate and timely bookkeeping, month-end close, financial statements, and reconciliations.

  • Manage and improve core finance processes including accounts payable and receivable, expense management, purchasing, payroll coordination, and cash management.

  • Own financial management of grants, including grant budgeting, forecasting, expense tracking, financial reporting, and ensuring expenditures remain aligned with grant requirements.

  • Partner with internal teams and external advisors to maintain strong grant compliance, documentation, reporting, and audit readiness.

  • Oversee and improve revenue cycle management processes, including coding, billing, claims, reimbursement, collections, and related financial workflows.

  • Develop reporting and controls to monitor revenue cycle performance, identify issues, and improve accuracy, efficiency, and collections.

  • Coordinate tax, audit, insurance, and other financial compliance activities with external advisors.

  • Support board and investor reporting, including financial analysis, forecasts, KPIs, and presentation materials.

  • Support future fundraising processes, including financial modeling, diligence, data-room preparation, and investor materials.

  • Help manage the company’s cap table, equity-related financial reporting, and associated processes in partnership with leadership and external advisors.

  • Develop financial and operational metrics that help UpDoc understand performance as the business scales, including revenue, margins, unit economics, reimbursement, and other relevant business and healthcare metrics.

  • Evaluate and implement finance systems, tools, controls, and workflows that improve accuracy and efficiency while remaining appropriate for an early-stage company.

  • Leverage AI and automation tools to improve financial analysis, reporting, forecasting, documentation, and operational workflows.

  • Take ownership of a range of finance-related and general operational projects as company needs evolve.

  • Build strong financial discipline across the organization without introducing unnecessary process or bureaucracy.

  • Help define how the finance function evolves and, over time, build additional internal finance capabilities as the company grows.

What You’ll Need
  • 6+ years of relevant experience across strategic finance, FP&A, accounting, healthcare finance, or related finance roles, with meaningful experience in a startup or high-growth environment.

  • Experience owning financial models, budgets, forecasts, and scenario planning.

  • Strong understanding of financial statements and accounting fundamentals, with enough accounting depth to effectively oversee the close and external accounting partners.

  • Demonstrated experience with grant budgeting and financial management, including budget development, expense tracking, reporting, compliance requirements, and audit-ready documentation.

  • Strong understanding of healthcare revenue cycle management, including medical coding, billing, claims, reimbursement, collections, and the financial implications of payer processes.

  • Experience translating financial and operational data into clear recommendations for executives and non-finance stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to build processes and financial infrastructure in an environment where they may not already exist.

  • Proficiency with AI tools and a demonstrated ability to use AI and automation to improve finance, analysis, reporting, or operational workflows.

  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear, executive-level financial reporting.

  • Comfort working independently and taking ownership of both strategic projects and hands-on execution.

  • A highly flexible, operational mindset and willingness to take on work outside a traditional finance remit when needed.

  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving, ambiguous early-stage environment.

Highly Desired
  • Experience as an early or first finance hire at a venture-backed startup.

  • Experience in healthcare technology, digital health, AI, or another regulated or technology-driven industry.

  • Experience managing financial requirements associated with government, research, or healthcare-related grants.

  • Experience with healthcare reimbursement models and revenue cycle operations in a provider or digital healthcare environment.

  • Experience supporting fundraising, board reporting, investor reporting, or financial due diligence.

  • Experience with revenue modeling, pricing, unit economics, and commercial financial analysis.

  • Experience implementing or scaling finance systems and processes.

  • Familiarity with startup finance and operational systems such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, Carta, Gusto, Ramp, Brex, or similar platforms.

  • CPA, MBA, or other relevant financial qualification is a plus, but not required.
