The Head of English leads the English Department and plays a key role in shaping a positive, engaging, and inclusive learning experience for students across the school. This role focuses on supporting and mentoring teachers, strengthening teaching practice, and ensuring the English curriculum promotes strong literacy, communication skills, and a love of learning.
Key ResponsibilitiesGuide, mentor, and coach English teachers to support their professional growth and classroom practice
Lead the development and review of curriculum plans, ensuring alignment with international standards
Model effective, student‑centred teaching strategies and facilitate collaborative planning across the department
Oversee assessment practices to ensure fairness, consistency, and meaningful feedback for students
Use data and observations to identify strengths, areas for development, and opportunities for instructional improvement
Promote a positive departmental culture rooted in collaboration, reflection, and continuous improvement
Coordinate department meetings, professional learning, and shared resource development
Contribute to whole‑school literacy initiatives and cross‑departmental projects
Teach a reduced timetable to stay connected to classroom practice and model high‑quality instruction
Teaching qualification and a degree relevant to English or literacy education
Experience teaching English in an international or multicultural school setting
Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, or support other teachers
Strong understanding of curriculum development and effective literacy instruction
Excellent communication, organisational, and leadership skills
