The RoleSurefire Cyber seeks a Head of Engineering to lead and scale our engineering organization during significant growth. This is a hands-on leadership role for a builder, that combines strategic vision with operational excellence, emphasizing AI-native capabilities that will define the future of incident response.
The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced environments, has deep experience managing engineers and engineering managers, and brings expertise in both cybersecurity and modern AI/ML systems. You understand that the future of Digital Forensics and Incident Response (DFIR) is human-led and machine-driven, and you're ready to build the organization that makes it real.
The ProjectMost IR firms scale linearly: more cases require more analysts. We're building something different. By developing intelligent automation and agentic AI systems, you'll create infrastructure that lets us scale exponentially while maintaining the quality and speed that's made Surefire a leader in the space.
You won't be bolting AI onto legacy systems or chasing incremental improvements. You'll be architecting the foundation for a new category of IR capability. This is greenfield work with real-world impact, backed by a company with the reputation and client base to bring it to market.
ResponsibilitiesStrategy & Technical Vision- Define and execute the engineering roadmap aligned with business and product strategy
- Lead AI/ML integration, including agentic AI, LLMs, and responsible AI deployment
- Establish standards for scalability, security, and resilience
- Build and mentor engineers and engineering managers, foster accountability and continuous improvement
- Recruit top talent and create clear career development pathways
- Oversee product development ensuring quality and on-time delivery
- Implement Agile/DevOps practices, own architecture and tooling decisions
- Partner with CTO and Head of Product on priorities, planning, and resource allocation
- Serve as technical advisor in customer and partner conversations
- Manage engineering budget, headcount, and tooling investments
- Make build-vs-buy decisions balancing speed, cost, and maintainability
- 10+ years of progressive engineering experience, with at least 5 years in senior leadership roles managing managers
- Experience managing teams of 8+ engineers and external consultants, with a track record of scaling teams during growth
- Demonstrated success building and scaling engineering teams in high-growth or startup environments
- Strong technical foundation in software and systems design, with the ability to engage credibly in architectural discussions
- Experience implementing Agile methodologies and DevOps practices at scale
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
- Proven track record of delivering products on time and with high quality
- Reporting Structure This role reports directly to the CTO.
In the first 90 days, you'll have assessed the current engineering organization, established relationships with key stakeholders, and identified immediate opportunities to improve team effectiveness and delivery cadence.
In the first year, you'll have built a scalable engineering organization capable of supporting aggressive growth targets, implemented metrics-driven engineering practices, and delivered key platform capabilities that advance our agentic-powered vision.
