Head of Engineering

Location: San Francisco · Full-time · 5 days a week in-office

Advex is building vision AI agents for manufacturing. We are tackling two core problems in computer vision for the industrial world: real-world data shortages (leading to long data collection time) and the fact that <.3% of factory workers can use existing vision systems (blocking them from scaling). We have already solved the first problem: our synthetic data generation platform allows our Fortune 500 customers to reduce data collection time by >90% and see up to 300% improvement in model performance in <6 hours.

The next evolution of our product is tackling scalability. To achieve this, we fundamentally changing the way vision works in manufacturing by ditching CNNs for VLMs/FMs and creating generative vision agents that require little to no data and are programmable by anyone.

Advex is a seed stage tech startup backed by Construct Capital, PearVC, and the founders of Dropbox and Gradient Ventures.

Our team comes with over a decade of industry and research experience from top organizations and labs like Waymo, Berkeley AI Research Lab, Google Brain, and Qualcomm.

We’re hiring a Head of Engineering to lead and scale our technical team. As our head of engineering, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the company's technical direction. Your hands-on involvement will include:

1. Lead and scale a small team of ML and generalist engineers

2. Build our core product and scale our platform into the hands of some of the largest companies in the world

3. Contribute heavily to the architectural roadmap, laying out the foundation for the Advex platform

4. Collaborate with our founder on product direction, customer needs, and hiring.

We are looking for stellar individuals who can lead, are autonomous, and can make decisions with limited information.

We are seeking a candidate who embodies the following qualifications and characteristics:

• 5+ years engineering experience, including shipping production ML and CV systems

• Proven ability to lead and hire teams

• Proven ability to translate product requirements into technical roadmaps

• Prior startup experience

• Deep knowledge of Python, ML infra, and cloud deployment (GCP preferred)

• Proven track record of rapidly delivering complex projects within tight deadlines

• Strong bias for action

• Bonus: background in scaling or working adjacent to VLMs or generative vision models.
