Job Opportunity:
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for a leader with deep Contract Surety Middle Market experience who is interested in joining the dynamic BHSI Surety team. We are a bottom-line focused company with a long-term view to all our underwriting decisions. However, we do appreciate that technology can and will play a significant role in this space in the years to come. The candidate will embrace technology and its potential impacts.
The candidate will think strategically and act collaboratively as they build our business in the middle market space. The ability to build both internal and external relationships will be key. The candidate will have a deep understanding of the decision drivers, both the customer and brokers’ buying decisions.
We are seeking the best candidate for the role. While proximity to our team locations in Boston, MA; New York, NY; Atlanta, GA; Houston, TX; Los Angelas, CA, San Fransico, CA, Chicago, IL, Seattle, WA, Indianapolis, IN or Plymouth Meeting, PA is preferred, we will also consider exceptional candidates located elsewhere.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop our “go to market” strategy for our Middle Market Contract Surety Business.
- Attract, hire, lead and develop the contract surety team who will build and manage a portfolio of contract surety risks.
- Draft underwriting criteria and develop a framework for assessing risk.
- Lead portfolio management activities ensuring that the portfolio remains within appetite.
- Ensure our activities in building a middle market business align with and assist in the continued growth of our existing surety business.
- Work closely in collaborative team environment
- Collaborate with brokers and customers in developing mutually beneficial relationships.
- Ensure appropriate file documentation and compliance.
- Stay informed about the competitive landscape and the product line’s unique risk profile.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
- College degree or equivalent with a minimum of 15-20 years of experience serving Middle Market Contractors either as an underwriter, broker, or both.
- Experience at a national level or multiple geographies will be a plus.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be collaborative and team-focused with strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.
- Maintain awareness of the competitive environment, and the unique risk profile of the product line.

The base salary range for this position is from $250,000.00 to $325,000.00, along with annual bonus eligibility; a candidate’s salary is determined by their relevant skills and experience. We value our teammates – both their capabilities and character – as demonstrated by our amazing culture.

Skills Required
- College degree or equivalent with 15-20 years serving Middle Market contractors as an underwriter, broker, or both
