To participate in all work activities and perform a variety of technical tasks as directed by the Golf Course Superintendent and/or Assistant.  May lead assigned workers on special projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (This list is not intended to detail all aspects of the assigned work but is representative of the job’s overall responsibilities.)

  • Maintenance and upkeep of assigned golf course to include mowing fairways, greens, tees, and roughs, raking and edging traps, and weed abatement.
  • Before each shift, review your worksite ensuring there are no existing or potential safety issues or security risks.
  • Perform and assist in gardening duties which may include planting and trimming trees and flowers.
  • Maintain tee boxes and greens; change cups and move tee markers.
  • Maintain turf to include annual aerification and overseeding, application of chemicals in accordance with manufacturers specifications.
  • Operation, cleaning and maintenance of pneumatic devices and hand tools, light equipment, company provided trucks and tractors in the field and in the pro and maintenance shops.
  • Assists in the repair and installation of irrigation equipment and systems.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner.
  • Work with assigned employees in the work area providing training as necessary.
  • Participate in the operation and maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Participate in annual overseeding and perform all functions associated with this function.
  • Have the ability to operate all machinery, mow greens, tees, fairways, and rough, including heavy equipment. (Front-end loader, backhoe, trencher, and a variety of hand and power tools.)
  • Must be able to work weekends and overtime on short notice.
  • Maintains consistent record of acceptable attendance and punctuality according to policy guidelines.
     

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Takes direction from the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent. Responsibilities include training employees and ensuring projects meet timelines and requirements.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Sufficient Training and education to demonstrate possession of required knowledge, skills and qualifications are required.

  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience in golf course maintenance, landscaping, planting, cultivating, pruning and maintaining shrubs and turf grasses; or horticulture including
  • One year of supervisory or lead responsibility; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in the proper and safe use of chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers and soil conditioners.
  • Knowledge in drainage methods, watering practices and a variety of irrigation systems and their computers.
  • Ability to verbally communicate business and safety information in English with customers, co-workers, supervisors, or others whose primary language is English. Ability to communicate bilingually to our Spanish speaking employees is highly desired.      
     

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Arizona driver's license and good driving record for insurance purposes.  Certified Pest Control license preferred.

PHYSICAL and MENTAL DEMANDS 
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, use hands to finger, handle, grasp, pull, push, or feel; reach with hands and arms above shoulders and talk or hear ability to taste and smell.  Work is performed in outdoor conditions in all types of weather. 

The employee is required to drive certain types of equipment to include utility carts and riding mowers. Use equipment such as grass rakes, grass blowers, hedge trimmers and walk behind mowers.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move more than 50 pounds and up to 100 pounds or more with assistance. 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, and must be able to tolerate extremely hot and cold outside weather conditions. 

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

The work environment is potentially hazardous.  May come in contact with different fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. Employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outdoor weather to include extreme heat.
