Principal Purpose of Position:

The Global Logistics Manager is responsible for developing and executing Carpenter Technology's global transportation, distribution, and logistics strategy. This position provides leadership for domestic and international freight operations, logistics network optimization, logistics compliance, carrier management, and supply chain risk mitigation. The role partners closely with Manufacturing, Procurement, Sales, Customer Service, Finance, Distribution Centers, and external logistics providers to improve service performance, enhance operational reliability, control freight spend, and support corporate growth objectives while ensuring regulatory compliance and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment

  • Develop, communicate, and implement supply chain strategies that will meet and exceed Carpenter Technology’s domestic and international reliability measures.

  • Lead logistics network optimization initiatives, including transportation strategy, distribution network design, inventory flow improvement, and supply chain risk mitigation to improve service, reliability, and financial performance.

  • Provide leadership and direction across multiple functions, warehousing operations, common carrier and dedicated freight and transportation services, conversion services, and procurement of production supplies both domestically and internationally, to maximize customer satisfaction and financial performance.

  • Develop and implement strategies for the delivery of product direct to customer, to the distribution center, and intra-plant locations to meet customer and corporate financial requirements.

  • Develop and implement strategies to inventory, service, and distribute product in the distribution centers, between DC locations, and to the end customer.

  • Align the supply chain resources and key communication links needed to support delivery and distribution services goals across Carpenter and third-party service providers.

  • Responsible for leading logistics personnel and influencing logistics operations across multiple facilities, distribution centers, and third-party logistics partners.

  • Provide leadership and influence across business functions where direct reporting relationships do not exist to align logistics priorities, resources, and execution.

  • Work with sales and manufacturing and third-party logistics providers to develop and implement processes, procedures and measures for designing and servicing our transportation and distribution network to balance supply chain resources with supply chain requirements to optimize the performance of the business both domestically and internationally.

  • Provide coaching and development opportunities across multiple functions, including setting performance expectations, supporting employee training and succession planning, monitoring workload, and promoting a culture of safety, accountability, and customer-focused service.

  • Manage the daily freight & distribution operations which includes communications with internal and external customers, service providers, customer service, and manufacturing

  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with freight forwarders, transportation providers, customs brokers, and logistics suppliers while supporting sourcing initiatives, carrier reviews, contract negotiations, and strategic service evaluations.

  • Identify, lead, and participate in continuous improvement projects

  • Manage product and logistics suppliers to fulfill Carpenter Technology’s supply chain needs

  • Effectively resolve problems by utilizing internal and external resources and by determining best course of action

  • Serve as the primary escalation point for transportation disruptions, customs delays, capacity constraints, service failures, and customer-critical delivery issues while coordinating corrective actions across internal and external stakeholders.

  • Run daily planning meetings to review ship dates, back-orders, and resolve any challenges preventing orders from shipping

  • Create monthly vendor forecasts and carrier allocation plans to optimize transportation flows while managing costs

  • Manage carrier performance data and key logistics performance indicators, including on-time delivery, freight spend, carrier compliance, shipment exceptions, and service reliability, to ensure compliance with service level agreements and continuous improvement objectives.

  • Periodically audit transportation, customs, and export documentation for accuracy and compliance with domestic transportation regulations, international trade requirements, customs regulations, Incoterms, DOT requirements, and company policies.

  • Provide the highest quality of customer support while developing time sensitive and cost-effective routings/quotations

  • Build relationships with customers, offices, overseas and domestic agents, and service providers

  • Analyze transportation methods, routing strategies, invoices, accessorial charges, and operating procedures to deliver cost-effective logistics solutions while maintaining service and customer expectations.

  • Secure competitive freight rates to support shipping operations

  • Lead freight cost-control activities, including carrier invoice review, accessorial charge analysis, rate application validation, and routing decision review to identify savings opportunities and prevent unnecessary logistics expense.

  • Utilize advanced analytics, data mining techniques, and transportation management reporting tools to provide proactive business insights, identify cost-saving opportunities, support strategic decision-making, and improve supply chain performance.

  • Create and communicate reports on transportation cost trends, carrier utilization, freight spend, logistics KPIs, service performance, capacity utilization, and cost drivers while developing action plans to address identified opportunities.

  • Maintain & communicate best practices both internally and externally for continuous process improvement in the Logistics Department

  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve logistics policies, procedures, standard operating procedures, routing guides, and best practices to ensure operational consistency and regulatory compliance.

  • Maintain communication with vendors, buyers, Customs, custom brokers, forwarders, and steamship lines, along with internal and external customers to enhance productivity, compliance, and relations for business accuracy

  • Negotiation of spot rates

  • Own and execute a multi-year domestic and international logistics strategy aligned with corporate growth, customer service, working-capital, and cost objectives.

  • Lead enterprise-level carrier sourcing, bid events, contract strategy, supplier business reviews, and rate negotiations across critical transportation modes and logistics providers.

  • Develop and manage the logistics budget, forecast freight spend, quantify cost drivers, and deliver productivity, service, and cost-reduction commitments.

  • Accountable for achieving annual freight budget commitments and productivity targets through strategic sourcing, transportation optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Develop business cases and capital justifications for logistics technology, automation, and network investments.

  • Establish governance for logistics compliance, risk management, business continuity, and supplier performance across domestic transportation, international trade, customs, export, DOT, and documentation requirements.

  • Sponsor cross-functional logistics transformation initiatives, including systems optimization, network redesign, automation, data visibility, and process standardization.

  • Lead organizational change initiatives and drive adoption of new logistics processes, systems, and operating models.

  • Represent Logistics in senior-level business reviews by communicating performance, risks, mitigation plans, and strategic recommendations to leadership.

  • Build organizational capability by developing leadership depth, succession plans, training programs, and standardized performance expectations across the logistics team.

  • Partner with Sales, Customer Service, Manufacturing, Procurement, Finance, Distribution Centers, and third-party logistics providers to resolve enterprise-level service, capacity, and cost challenges.

  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned

Education and/or Training:  

  • Associates degree with 7 years of managerial, supervisory, or Carpenter experience required. Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of managerial, supervisory or Carpenter experience is preferred.

  • Prior work experience in logistics/supply chain management/freight forwarding industry is required

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel

  • Detailed oriented, analytical, and able to multitask

  • Must work well individually and as part of a team

  • Working knowledge of customs process and export regulations

  • Working knowledge of domestic processes and regulations

  • Working knowledge of DOT regulations

  • Working knowledge of international shipping methods and Incoterms

  • Working Knowledge of Export Cargo documentation requirements

Relevant Work Experience:
