Working at Katmai, we experience first-hand the advantages of being together in the same space. We feel the way it facilitates more natural communication and self-expression. We see it turn strangers into close colleagues and friends. Yes — we are building a virtual game changer, here.

Ready to be part of the future?  Join Katmai’s innovative team and together, let’s redefine virtual experiences and hybrid work in a headset-free world of 3D collaboration and spontaneous interactions!

We work inside of the Katmai Virtual Office.

WHAT WE’RE SEEKING

We are looking for an experienced 3D Game Engineer to help join our dynamic team.  As a 3D Game Engineer, you will play a key role in designing and implementing cutting-edge 3D graphics and gameplay features for our web-based 3D video conferencing platform.  The ideal candidate should have a strong background in graphics programming, and a passion for creating immersive gaming experiences.

You will work alongside our Experience team to ensure a successful and well-balanced product that delivers on both creative and technical fronts working on the mechanics of how users move through the space.  Effective communication and collaboration are essential to align technical implementation with the creative vision.  As a Software Game Engineer, you will collaborate with the Creative Director to understand the creative goals and how they can be translated into technical requirements and provide insights into the limitations and possibilities of the chosen game engine, hardware, and development tools.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Develop and implement advanced 3D graphics rendering techniques to achieve realistic visuals.
  • Optimize rendering pipelines for performance across various hardware and browsers.
  • Create prototypes or proof-of-concept implementations to demonstrate specific mechanics or visual effects based on the Creative Director's vision.
  • Create and optimize shaders for real-time rendering, including vertex and pixel shaders.
  • Proven experience collaborating with Creatives to achieve the desired visual style through graphics programming.
  • Solve complex mathematical problems related to 3D transformations and geometry.
  • Work with graphics software (e.g Blender) to define a sustainable graphics pipeline from creation to integration of assets into our 3D environment
  • Customize and extend engine functionality to meet specific project requirements.
  • Identify and address performance bottlenecks related to 3D graphics, ensuring smooth frame rates on target platforms.
  • Implement LOD (Level of Detail) systems and other optimization techniques.

WHAT YOU BRING

Technical Skills

  • Proven experience in game development with a focus on 3D graphics.
  • Proficiency in a programming language (such as Typescript/Javascript)
  • Strong understanding of 3D graphics algorithms and shading languages (such as GLSL).
  • Experience with 3D modeling tools and asset pipelines.
  • Familiarity with popular game engines (Unity, Unreal Engine).
  • Passion for staying updated on industry trends and emerging technologies in 3D graphics.

Communication

  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • You can explain why you like or don’t like a technical approach, and can get technical buy-in from others.
  • You are good at figuring out the underlying problem to solve and work well with other people in this regard.

Leadership

  • People learn something new every time they work with you.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including artists, creatives, and other engineers, to achieve cohesive and visually stunning game experiences.
  • Help to establish the direction for the team, leveraging your expertise to guide and inspire collaboration efforts towards shared goals.
