  • SUMMARY:
    The Graduate Assistant – Teaching provides instructional support to faculty members by assisting with teaching-related responsibilities such as classroom preparation, grading, student support, and course development. This position is designed to help graduate students gain firsthand experience in academic instruction, which may include leading class sessions, proctoring exams, and assisting with instructional materials. Through this role, students will strengthen critical skills including public speaking, classroom management, academic communication, time management, and a deeper understanding of their academic discipline. This experience is ideal for students interested in future careers in education, training, or academic leadership.

    IMPORTANT:

    Graduate Assistants cannot hold a Student Worker or any other hourly position while employed as a Graduate Assistant. However, a Graduate Assistant may work in multiple departments as a GA, as long as the combined hours do not exceed 20 hours per week. Graduate Assistants are not permitted to work during breaks or interim periods and may not begin work before the semester officially begins. Hourly rates are determined by the Provost’s Office and vary depending on whether the student is enrolled in a master's or doctoral program.

     

    SUMMARY:

    Salary: $4K a long semester

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Primary responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

    • Teach or assist in teaching undergraduate-level courses, discussion sections, or laboratory sections, as assigned

    • Attend lectures given by the faculty member to stay informed of course content and expectations

    • Lead classroom discussions, tutorials, or review sessions to reinforce course materials

    • Develop and update instructional materials such as syllabi, visual aids, supplementary notes, and course websites

    • Prepare, proctor, and grade examinations, assignments, and papers in accordance with faculty guidelines

    • Record and maintain accurate grade records and assist with grade-related documentation

    • Return graded assignments and assessments to students according to established timelines

    • Notify instructors of student concerns or errors in instructional content or assignments

    • Order or obtain materials and supplies needed for instruction or lab activities

    • Maintain scheduled office hours to meet with students for academic support and guidance

    • Provide one-on-one or group academic assistance, as needed

    • Copy and distribute classroom materials and handouts

    • Perform other duties as assigned

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    ·         Education: Must be an active graduate-level student at East Texas A&M University

    ·         Knowledge / Skills: Must be punctual and possess strong computer skills. (Please include department-specific programs, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

    ·         Ability to: Multitask and work cooperatively with others. Maintain professionalism and confidentiality.

     

    PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

    ·         Preferred field of study related to the department

    ·         Prior administrative or office-related experience

    ·         Strong written and verbal communication skills

    ·         Experience with customer service or project coordination
