Avant is looking for a Software Engineer III to build and scale critical systems that power our products and deliver real value to our customers. This is a mid-senior level role for engineers who are confident tackling complex problems, making thoughtful implementation decisions, and driving features to completion with autonomy. You’ll work across the stack and collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering peers to ship high-quality software in a fast-moving environment. This role is ideal for someone with several years of experience who’s ready to step up and take on more ownership, while still honing their technical depth and leadership skills.
What you’ll do at Avant:
Lead the design and development of medium to large features across the full stack, backend services, APIs, and web UIs.
Own delivery of features end-to-end, including architecture, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
Make key technical implementation decisions focusing on quality, maintainability, and performance.
Navigate and contribute across multiple layers of the tech stack to solve complex, cross-cutting problems.
Propose improvements to code quality, development practices, and system architecture.
Collaborate regularly with product managers, designers, and engineers to clarify requirements and align solutions.
Contribute to Agile ceremonies as a core member of a Scrum team, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
Provide mentorship to engineers through brown bags, code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
Work independently with limited oversight, you’re given the “what” and trusted to own the “how”.

3–7 years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in a full-stack or backend-focused role.
Proficiency in one or more object-oriented languages (Ruby, Python, etc.) and familiarity with modern frontend frameworks (React preferred).
Strong understanding of web application architecture, API design, and database systems.
Experience working in Agile teams and collaborating with cross-functional partners.
With a pragmatic mindset, you balance technical craft with delivering business value.
Excellent communication skills and a willingness to mentor others and share knowledge.
A growth-oriented attitude. You seek feedback, adapt quickly, and look for ways to raise the bar.

This role is based on our downtown Chicago Office, located in the Merchandise Mart. We highly value collaboration and our hybrid schedule (M, T, Th in-office) enables flexibility to balance work and individual priorities.
Compensation Range:
The base salary range for this job is USD $100,000 - USD $140,000 / Year
Employees new to Avant typically come in below the midpoint of the pay range. The compensation range is based on the level outlined in the job posting, and compensation decisions are dependent on each applicant's experience, skills and abilities.

This role is eligible for additional incentives, including an annual bonus. These rewards are allocated based on level, impact and performance in the role.
