About this Role
The Athletic is looking for an energetic, motivated football data writer to work in its expanding betting vertical, on a freelance basis through May 2025, to support a commercial partnership. The right candidate will be part of a talented team and produce exceptional preview and explainer articles that inform and entertain our readership on a daily basis, through the lens of betting. You will have entry-level experience working in the industry, a brilliant quality of copy and the ability to quickly gather facts and tell stories. Expertise and insight into betting markets and industry is preferable.
Responsibilities
- Writing, editing and publishing preview, news and explainer articles.
- Integrating betting odds into your storytelling and articles.
- Analysing matches and key battles within them, understanding where they could be won and lost as a device to find value in betting markets.
- Quickly understanding challenging concepts and breaking them down in an intelligent, concise manner.
- Curating the best content from social media.
- Collaborating with senior editors to expand ideas across formats.
- Understanding SEO and best practices.
- Understanding of trends – both on search and social media.
Requirements
- Ideally 4+ years of experience in sports journalism, with experience on a national sports desk or media.
- A journalism degree or equivalent.
- Expert knowledge of football.
- Must be flexible and collaborative.
