About Endless Studios:

Endless Studios is a global, youth game-making studio and learning community on a mission to help learners move from players to creators - building real games, portfolios, and future-ready skills. Creators collaborate with industry mentors and peers around the world, contributing to community-led game projects and gaining the hands-on experience that opens doors to jobs across the broader digital economy. We have operations globally and work with schools, universities, game studios, and strategic partners to make creation through game making accessible to everyone.

About the Product

We are beginning development of a new product that is designed to put creative tools in people's hands rather than only content in front of them. It is real-time 3D, it runs in a browser tab, and it is built to reach the widest possible range of devices, from a school Chromebook and a mid-range Android phone through to a tablet and a gaming PC.

This product will be based on both a live Windows-native product and an existing browser-native prototype.

We are looking for a Founding Software Engineer to take the project from an initial prototype to a hardened foundation from which the full product can be built.

The Role

You will be the first and initially only engineer, working directly with the Head of Product and collaborating with the broader Windows-native product engineering team.

You will help determine what the product should be, how it should work, and how it should be built. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Define the MVP and rapidly prototype potential approaches.
  • Evaluate technologies such as Three.js, WebGPU, WebGL, PlayCanvas, and other web-game technologies.
  • Evaluate the existing prototype and determine what to keep and what to leave behind
  • Design the architecture and build the foundation for the initial product.
  • Evaluate how the browser-native product should interact with our live Windows-native product.
  • Explore questions such as multiplayer, content compatibility, and the appropriate boundaries between browser-native and the Windows-native product.
  • Establish an architecture suitable for an open-source community.
  • Use AI-assisted development aggressively to accelerate development and experimentation.
  • Provide strong technical and architectural leadership while remaining a hands-on individual contributor.

This role can grow into a technical leadership role as the product and team expand.

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated ability.
  • Strong experience with web-based game development and real-time 3D, including Three.js, WebGPU, WebGL, PlayCanvas, or comparable technologies.
  • Professional Unity/game development experience.
  • Strong understanding of multiple game-development disciplines, such as gameplay, rendering, networking, tools, engines, or technical art.
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly prototype and evaluate competing technologies.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development.
  • Strong product instincts and the ability to think like a product owner and technical leader, not just an implementer.
  • Excellent architectural judgment and communication skills.
  • Comfortable operating independently in an ambiguous, rapidly changing startup environment.
  • Strong performance and optimization instincts across a wide range of hardware.

Nice to Have

Experience with game engines/editors, open-source projects, multiplayer, content pipelines, or shipping products across desktop and mobile.

Who You'll Be

We’re looking for someone who would rather build three prototypes than debate one architecture for three weeks.

You should enjoy figuring out problems that don’t have obvious answers, learning new technologies quickly, and moving from an idea to a working product with minimal overhead.

Most importantly, you should want real ownership. You’ll help define the product, make the architectural decisions, and write the code.

Engagement

Remote / Anywhere · Contractor · Initial 3-month engagement

The initial engagement will focus on defining the MVP, evaluating the prototype, technology and architecture, and building the first working version of the product.

For the right person, there is an opportunity to continue with the product and grow into a larger technical leadership role.

To apply: Please provide your resume/LinkedIn profile and examples of software, games, tools, prototypes, or other products you’ve built. GitHub or other public work is highly valued.

What We Do

At Endless Studios, we envision a digitally empowered future for every student. We're a youth-centric game-making studio where budding creators collaborate with professionals to develop games. We are designed to mirror the authentic environment of a professional game studio to train technical skills like coding and design, alongside soft skills such as leadership and problem-solving. By blending game development with an enriching learning experience, we aim to nurture a community of young creators ready to innovate in a digital future. Endless Studios' parent company, E-Line Media, was founded over a decade ago to develop games that catalyze curiosity, explore meaningful themes, and provide gateways to new perspectives and interests. Our consumer games with meaningful themes (e.g. Never Alone, Beyond Blue) and our game-based learning platforms (e.g. Gamestar Mechanic, MinecraftEDU) have reached a global audience of over 10 million players across channels and been used by over 15,000 schools and after-school programs. Endless Network, our other parent organization, is a global network of companies, foundations, non-profits, technologists, and advocates who want to unlock human potential through technology. We are dedicated to empowering the next generation to succeed in the digital economy. We work to transform the lives of kids and young adults by expanding access to technology and information; and by helping them develop 21st century skills.
