Financial Controller

The Financial Controller is responsible for leading the organisation's financial control, reporting, compliance, ensuring the effective stewardship of approximately €80 million in annual income derived from public funding, grants, service delivery, fundraising and other income streams. The role provides strategic and operational financial leadership, ensuring robust financial governance, strong internal controls, regulatory and funder compliance, and the delivery of accurate and timely financial information to support organisational decision-making.

Working closely with the Chief Financial Officer and members of the Finance Team, the Financial Controller plays a critical role in safeguarding organisational assets, maintaining funder and regulatory compliance and supporting financial sustainability and resilience to deliver IWA’s vision and mission.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Management and Control

Lead and manage the organisation's financial accounting function.

Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and completeness of all financial records.

Oversee month-end and year-end close processes ensuring timely and accurate reporting.

Maintain and continuously improve financial controls, policies, and procedures.

Monitor financial performance and identify emerging financial risks and opportunities.

Lead the Receivables process end to end.

Financial Reporting

Preparation and review of monthly management accounts and circulation to key stakeholders

Preparation of annual Financial Statements in line with FRS 102 and Charities SORP.

Preparation of financial performance reports for CFO, CEO and senior management team, Board and Audit, Finance & Risk Committee.

Provide financial analysis and costings to support informed decision-making.

Public Funding and Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with all funding and regulatory requirements.

Oversee the preparation and submission of funder returns and financial reports.

Ensure compliance with relevant charity, company law, and public sector governance requirements.

Ensure Tax compliance.

Budgeting and Financial Planning

Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with CFO, budget holders and senior management team.

Support the long-term financial planning and forecasts.

Monitor budget performance and provide proactive analysis and recommendations.

Audit and Assurance

Lead the annual audit for the organisation and act as principal liaison with external auditors.

Manage implementation of audit recommendations and internal control improvements.

Lead internal audit reviews for the organisation.

Leadership and Team Management

Lead, manage, motivate, and develop the finance team to deliver a high-performing finance function.

Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and customer service.

Promote effective collaboration across departments and service areas.

Governance Management, Systems and Process Improvement

Maintain and enhance a strong financial governance framework.

Support compliance with organisational policies and governance standards.

Drive improvements in financial systems and finance processes.

Support digital transformation initiatives and finance system developments as appropriate.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Training, Experience and Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

Professionally qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA or equivalent).

Minimum 5 years' post-qualification experience in a senior financial management role.

Essential Experience and Knowledge

Significant experience managing finance functions within a complex organisation.

Experience of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial control.

Experience managing external audits and regulatory reporting requirements.

Experience leading and developing finance teams.

Strong understanding of financial governance and internal control frameworks.

Excellent Technical skills.

Remuneration & Benefits

Salary (CO8) ranges from €80,523 to €98,685, dependent on experience (DOE).
