Job Summary
The Property & Casualty (P&C) Accounting Director leads the accounting and reporting function for the P&C Segments, ensuring timely and accurate recording of transactions and preparation of financial statements. This role provides day-to-day leadership and management of a team of professional accountants.
The P&C Accounting Team is part of Corporate Financial Services, CNA's corporate controller organization. The group leads CNA's financial close process, driving efficient accounting and related analysis, along with meaningful internal and external reporting. The group's responsibilities encompass property & casualty and life & group insurance, reinsurance and corporate accounting as well as technical advisory, financial control, services operations and SEC/GAAP and Statutory reporting.
This role provides opportunities to collaborate across business units and utilize new technologies, as we strive to continually enhance and improve processes.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Directs the work activities and has full leadership responsibility for the performance and development of the team.
  2. Provides leadership and review as a technical advisor for:
    1. monthly close and related processing and analysis (e.g. financial analysis, journal entry preparation).
    2. preparing and analyzing account reconciliations.
    3. analytical schedules, variances analyses, and analytical support for internal requests.
    4. quarterly/annual statutory and/or GAAP financial statements and schedules/exhibits in compliance with SEC, FASB, NAIC and other regulatory requirements, and monthly internal financial results packages.
  3. Supports the team in identifying and executing on process improvement projects, including furthering use of technology to streamline processes.
  4. Coordinates with our technical advisory team on new accounting pronouncements or in determining the proper accounting treatment of complex or unusual transactions.
  5. Leads audits for stand-alone legal entity reporting for certain P&C entities.
  6. Liaisons with internal and external auditors and provides necessary support.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
1. Highest level knowledge of accounting/finance principles practices and procedures and industry issues as they relate to the organization and senior-level knowledge of GAAP and statutory accounting procedures.
2. Ability to effectively lead, coach, and develop the accounting group while encouraging creativity and innovation.
3. Ability to achieve results by taking a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives.
4. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
5. Excellent organizational skills.
6. Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to interface with departmental staff internal and external management customers and other business units.
7. Ability to exercise professional judgment and assume responsibility for decisions which have an impact on people and quality of service.
8. Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and other business related software systems, including Workday.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting; CPA preferred.
Typically, a minimum of nine to twelve years related work experience.
Experience in a large public accounting firm and/or large public company SEC reporting experience and insurance industry experience is preferred.
