We put our customers first - exemplified by our mission: "We Protect Those Who Protect Us®." Sound like a team you want to be a part of? Come build your career with BAE Systems.
We are looking for a Product Line Chief Research Engineer (PLCRE) for the Autonomy, Processing & Exploitation (APEX) product line within FAST Labs. APEX research spans technology thrusts from sensor processing (including communications, position, navigation, and timing, and signal exploitation), through knowledge generation and sense-making, up to tactical and operational level autonomy and decision support for manned, unmanned, and teamed mission applications. Our research drives advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and statistical signal processing, pushing the boundaries of what is possible through advanced system prototypes and capability demonstrations. We seek to expand and advance our capabilities into full-spectrum, all-domain, all-participant, multi-time-scale applications.
The APEX PLCRE reports to the FAST Labs Chief Engineer and leads the engineering efforts across the product line in support of FAST labs technology research and development across all phases of research project evolution. This leadership includes supporting the establishment, planning, and execution of technology maturation strategies and engineering research and development approaches. The APEX PLCRE guides the application of appropriate engineering rigor and risk-taking naturally associated with advanced R&D, and ensures appropriate technology transition planning for product implementation in the receiving Business Area. Their direct reports include both project engineering managers (PEMs) and research engineers, and their extended team draws as needed from the deep discipline-specific skills provided through the Systems, Software, Hardware, and Microelectronics functional engineering groups. Together this engineering team partners with FAST Labs scientists to conceive, develop, and mature advanced technologies that solve the most challenging problems.
Because this role involves classified and collaborative work, it will require a full-time onsite presence. This position is located in Merrimack, NH, and will require travel to other BAE Systems facilities and potentially customer sites.
Specific job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Serve as research engineering focal point for all activity within the Product Line portfolio of programs, including strategic planning, bid and proposal support for engineering content, engineering strategy and integrated plans on programs, engineering staffing, issue reporting, and risk and opportunity management
  • Partner and collaborate with their Product Line Director and the associated scientists, Tech Area, and functional leads to ensure business/program goals, requirements, and needs are understood and achieved
  • Recruit, train, develop, mentor and retain Project Engineering Managers (PEMs) and Research Engineers to meet FAST Labs' technology maturation needs
  • Perform supervisory duties in alignment with the business, administering communications, performance, compensation and recognition programs in alignment with business needs, values, and budgets
  • Provide timely and accurate staffing and resource forecasts, supporting the efforts of the engineering design disciplines to acquire and satisfy staffing needs
  • Ensure preparation, review and approval of competitive engineering bids that are executable, meet established price-to-win targets, and cover defined work scope
  • Tailor and apply required and appropriate FAST Labs Engineering process based on the size, scope, complexity, and risk of projects
  • Ensure project and product safety are managed in accordance with company policies, procedures, processes, and best practices.
  • Improve our work environment by promoting teamwork, wellness, workplace flexibility, actively embracing diversity, modeling inclusive behaviors, and increasing leadership engagement
  • Provide coordination among all stakeholders to ensure all necessary reviews are conducted and approvals are received
  • Develop and maintain measures related to research engineering performance
  • Develop and lead continuous improvement activities and ensure adoption within the organization
  • Achieve established business and engineering financial targets
