Role Overview: 

Intramotev is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team to lead the design and development of innovative mechanical systems for our self-propelled rail vehicles. This role has a strong mechanical focus and the successful candidate will be a key member of the development team for capabilities in mechanical design (CAD), structural analysis (stress), and systems (brakes, motors, thermal control, retrofit installation, and support equipment). This role will also be responsible for mentoring junior designers and engineers. This is a full-time, in-office position, based out of St. Louis, MO.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of mechanical systems, from concept through production, for autonomous rail vehicles.
  • Develop and maintain complex structural and subcomponent designs using 3-D Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools, ensuring products meet performance and manufacturing requirements.
  • Perform and review advanced structural and thermal analyses to validate and optimize designs for performance, reliability, and safety.
  • Drive the design of mechanical systems and components, including their integration and installation on the vehicles.
  • Lead the development of test plans and oversee validation and verification activities to ensure designs meet operational and functional requirements.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to optimize component design for manufacturability, cost, and quality.
  • Solve complex problems related to fielded hardware design and provide technical support throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Mentor and coach junior mechanical engineers and designers, providing technical guidance and fostering their professional growth.

About You:

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of experience in mechanical design for aerospace, automotive, heavy machinery or complex industrial equipment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with 3D CAD software (e.g., Autodesk Inventor, Fusion, or similar) for complex component and assembly design.
  • Experience coaching or mentoring junior engineers or designers.
  • Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your area of expertise; ability to develop innovative and novel approaches.
  • Fluent in both written and verbal English.
  • U.S. Person (immigration or work visa sponsorship will not be provided).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Candidate should have a working knowledge of one or (ideally) multiple areas listed below:
  • Experience in directly applicable industries, such as Rail, Electric Vehicles, Automotive, or Heavy Machinery.
  • Expertise in structural analysis (FEA) and/or thermal management system design.
  • Experience with vehicle electrification, powertrain design, or e-axle development.
  • Deep knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles.
  • Experience working in Agile environments for hardware development.
  • Demonstrated experience working on project teams and collaborating with other engineering disciplines.

Typical Education and Experience: 

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 4 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master + 2 years' related work experience).
